You should never give your child that type of medication without a doctor's approval.

No, you should not put your child on medication without seeing a doctor first. Yes, it can cause very vivid dreams that are like virtual reality and other sleep disturbances. Also, it can have other side effects, many of which are unknown in the case of children.

Depending on the age of your child and specific symptoms, I think it would be best to try therapy first. If it is a teenager, all teens are depressed and can't focus to some degree, but if he/she is seriously depressed, then therapy is a must and only after you've tried everything else should medication be tried and under a psychiatrist. If your child is young (12 or under) and this is something that has come on suddenly, try talking to him/her and see what is going on- something must have triggered it.

Otherwise, therapy, therapy, therapy! HOWEVER, when looking for a therapist, find someone who specializes in children and who looks to solve problems and has concrete ideas and techniques to help your child cope and manager his/her life. Too many therapists waste everyone's time and money talking and talking and talking and nodding sympathetically, but never providing the tools and skills needed to actually help. It's a tough world out there and kids need to be able to arm themselves with ways to help them manage. Good luck!

Try conseling or a 2nd opinion. My son takes Concerta for adhd-not depression. He hasn't had nightmares or hallucinations. He's on the lowest dose possible and it has done wonders for him. Every situation is different and there are several different medications. Ask his teacher if he should be tested for ADHD. They can spot it and offer where to go. SO can the school nurse.

yes medication can cause nightmares and hallucinations and some anti-depression medicines can cause some kinds to think about suicide (least that is what the comercials say as a side effect) what you should be doing is talking to your childs dr about this.

no, children are children, let them go through thier phases. i hate when people make thier kids drug dependant....they will go through life not knowing how to cope with things without thier "fix" dont do it to your baby...please. find other things, play with him/her, help him/her concentrate...things like that. i think those child drugs are just something to take the place of real parenting.
