Everyone before me has given you good advice about the signs, symptoms and outcome of rabies infections.

Actually, there has been one reported case of a person surviving rabies even though there was not sufficient time to use the post exposure vaccination schedule. The doctors used drugs and lowered the patient's body temperature to induce a coma. The patient survived.

The virus enters peripheral nerves near the bite wound, or if saliva gets onto your eyeball, across the conjunctiva.

Depending on how far the bite is from the brain and spinal cord, e.g. the hand or foot vs the eyeball or face. You have more time or less time before serious neurological symptoms appear. The virus moves at a relatively slow pace up the nerve and divides when it gets into the nerve cell body near the nucleus. When the bite is on the hand or foot, a series of vaccinations and boosters of rabies vaccine may be given and this can prevent the appearance of disease. However, once symptoms appear the prognosis is bad and most infected people die.

It is important to know where the rabid animal that bit you is located immediately after you have been bitten. An animal control officer will capture or otherwise get control of the animal. It will have to be put down and its nervous system analyzed to see if it is infected with rabies. In some cases, the animal will be quaranteed for a period to see if it gets sick. In any case, getting the vaccine as soon as possible give's a better outcome.

The virus can have a very long incubation period (as long as a couple of years). But once the virus begins to work on the brain, symptoms develop with several hours. In some individuals, the infection results in a coma (aka dumb rabies), but in others, they hallucinate and become aggressive. But once symptoms begin, the infection is virtually 100% fatal within about 3-4 days.

SYMPTOMS

Eventually, early symptoms of rabies begin to appear. These symptoms include a sore throat, low-grade fever (above normal, but in the lower ranges), headache, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, and diarrhea. Painful spasms (contractions) may develop in the muscles that control breathing and swallowing. The infected person may begin to drool thick saliva. Other symptoms include dilated (enlarged) pupils, increased flow of tears and perspiration, and low blood pressure.

As the disease progresses the patient may begin to feel excited, confused, and sensitive to bright lights, loud noises, and touch. He or she becomes very thirsty but is unable to drink because swallowing is so painful. Just looking at water can cause painful spasms. It is this reaction that accounts for the name hydrophobia. Other severe symptoms include excessive salivation, dehydration, and loss of muscle tone (quality). Death usually occurs three to twenty days after symptoms first appear. Once a person or animal has developed rabies, recovery is very rare.

Once you get rabies, there is no cure and you will die. That's why when you get bitten by a wild animal and they can't catch it to see if it is infected you have to get rabies shots to keep from getting it.
Rabies infection in humans begins with symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat followed in several days by more serious and rapidly progressing symptoms such as restlessness, hallucinations, and seizures. The final stage is coma and death.

It attacks the nervous system and left untreated can cause severe neurological damage. Rabies can be cured if caught in time.
