All forms of exercise no matter what time of the day are good for your health. Exercising on an empty stomach allows for maximal fat burning, but it also causes maximal muscle loss. This is because your body burns down stored protein in muscle before it burns fat. If you wish to retain your muscle tone you should eat a light meal of carbohydrate and protein before you exercise at least 30mins before your workout. Carbohydrate is the body's perferred source of energy (ever hear of blood sugar level) and it will burn carbs first, then muscle, and finally fat. If you are looking to lose weight but keep muscle tone then eating on an empty stomach is not the best. And make sure you drink plenty of water when you exercise.

Most people who feel a need to work out have some body fat extra. So, you can go quite a while on accumulated body fat.

The problem is, burning body fat is a slow process to start. So, when you haven't eaten and start heavy exercise, your blood sugar can drop rather low, which is really ungood.

There are a number of things one can take. Some sort of liquid refreshment, such as Gator-Ade or sugar laden pop. Raisins are good. So is granola. An apple. Milk and crackers.

When biking across Iowa in the 70's we used to refer to running out of blood sugar as "sagging". Our emergency rations were M&M's and raisins, if mixed with nuts we called it GOOP. A bit of it worked wonders.

The point is, no, it won't hurt you, just have access to something, anything, in case you sag during exercise.

it's not a good idea to exercise on a totally empty stomach... can really mess w your blood sugar, also you may start feeling ill or faint.... at the very least you'll wear out sooner and won't get the most from your workout... i would suggest keeping some organic low fat low calorie cereal bars in your desk or car... also keeping an apple handy is a good idea. most gyms have vending machines where you can get a bar or piece of fruit.

You'll still be burning calories but you might have a harder time keeping your energy up. Try eating something small, an apple or an energy bar, just so your body has some energy to actually do the exercise.

the best time to exercise is first thing in the morning so I guess it's ok to do so on an empty stomach.

doing anything strenuous and being hungry will not give your body enough energy to do as much as it would if you would eat a little food before you exercise. and at times being hungry while exercising will make your hungrier than normal and you may over eat after .exercising
