i really want to get this book, but i am hesitant on how good it really is. so i wanted some honest feed back from the ppl who has the book.

how good is it? has it helped with your ima at all? (hsing yi or any other style) is it overly estimated due to it's place as a classic or is it the best book out there?

and finally, is it instructional book or is it insight to the little details that might farther already learned imaist? because i seen maybe books that touch on the basics and i usually get nothing out of the book.

I assume you are talking about the work of the great Sun Lutang. His "Xingyi Quan Xue," in original Chinese has many insights and gives a fairly precise description of his art. Theories go from common sense all the way to the ethereal, so how much you'll take away from the book depends the individual. The translated English version of the book is done fairly well, staying to true to the vague nature of the Chinese words used in the book. While Sun states that beginners can learn from the book, it won't be an easy task and the learner would need to be a dedicated prodigy at the arts, not unlike Sun himself was. I've found the book useful as a reference and for enlightenment in terms of theory and thinking. It's not an effective teach yourself "for dummies" book, despite Sun's claim to the contrary.

xing yi quan xue is a great book, but not for the beginner. you need to have an internal martial arts instructions first.

find a xing yi, ba gua, or a good wu style tai chi instructor, practice for a year or so. then the book will make more sense to you. one could imitate the postures in the book exactly, and miss the whole point.

another advance book is: Liang Zhen Pu Eight Diagram Palm. By Li Zi Ming. High View Publications. Pacific Grove, CA
