Damnit, I really feel like breaking that rule right now...
Choke on my own vomit or Starve awhile longer...that's a tough decision.

Because the possibility exists they can vomit during surgery, and aspirate the contents into the lungs, causing choking or pneumonia. Nothing in your stomach, nothing to choke on.

They do it so you hopefully won't vomit, poop or pee while on their operating table.... but you could challenge them. What if it was an emergency appendectimy? They have extra drugs to put in your IV to keep you from being nauseated. I know because even though I don't eat before surgery, (which I've had 4 times) I get nauseated and throw up afterwards and dehydrated--yea, big mess. BUT now the last two times, they've given me an extra something in the IV when I tell them I get nauseated and I don't have that problem. Worth questioning maybe??? Challenge the system a little bit????? Feeling rebellious???

Typically if you are having surgery that requires general anesthesia, they ask you not to eat because some of the side effects of the anesthesia can be nausea and vomiting. If you vomit while unconscious, you can choke or aspirate the vomit into your lungs and cause an infection.

People have various reactions to anesthesia. Some get nauseated. Others, when sedated, no longer control the gag reflex.

In either case, with no food in the stomach, nothing can come up from there and then clog the airway down to your lungs. Its been like this for over 100 years.

Anesthesia has the unfortunate result of making a person nauseous. It's easier to make sure that they have an empty stomach so that they don't vomit (& possibly choke) during surgery. When I was younger I was your typical curious dumb kid (lol) & ended up getting something lodged in my nose. It was far enough up that it was almost into one of my sinus cavities so at the hospital they had to knock me out & go in to surgically remove it. I remember throwing up once I woke up. It's not fun!

Anesthesia can make you nauseated and you'll throw up. Could go into your lungs.

You have to have surgery on an empty stomach.

So you won't get sick from the anesthisa, vomit and choke to death on it. Pops

because they give you something to make you sleep most of the time and if you eat first normally you'll throw up when you wake up so it's always better on an empty stomach

because when you wake up afterwards you may have the urge to throw up and you can drown in you own puke so its much easiser to prevent this if you have an empty stomache i know because i ask my surgeon b/4 my surgery----good question
