First of all, you need to really wash them good with TSP to remove any residual grime, oil or dirt. Make sure you protect your hands with rubber gloves, as TSP is a very strong product. You can find it at any hardware store. Once you've done that, lightly sand the cabinets with fine-grained sand paper to remove the luster and make the following steps much easier. Wipe off the dust using a soft damp cloth. Make sure there is no more sanding dust left before you move on to the next step.
Use oil based primer and paint one coat on the cabinets. Once you have used oil-based primer, you can use any kind of paint on the cabinets and it won't be a problem. Just remember, if you're in a kitchen, you'll want to use a paint that's easy to wash after.
Another solution would be to re-plate the cabinet doors. At large home help stores (such as Home Depot, etc) you can buy hundreds of different types of plating for the cabinets. Which means you don't have to change your cabinets to get wood ones, or stainless steel ones, or bamboo ones... You'll be surprised just how many different coverings there are out there. This is a bit expensive though, so make sure you really like what you chose. Happy redecorating.

Usually, you have to lightly sand the painted surfaces first, with fine sandpaper, then thoroughly clean the sanded surfaces with a tack cloth to get rid of the dust. Then paint.
I have used a product in the past that cleans the painted surface and makes it tacky at the same time. You might want to check with a good quality paint store or a store that sells wallpaper. I cannot find any of the product in my utility room, so I cannot give you a brand name.

You have to sand them first. That will take away the shininess and get them ready. You could strip them, but that will require a lot of work. Then prime with a primer and paint. If you want a wood grain look you will have to strip down to the wood and then sand.

For kitchen and bathroom cabinets you must use MELAMINE PAINT.This paint is specifically made for cabinetry. You must still prep. the old paint with a light sanding. This paint will not tarnish or absorb moisture.

Sand them down a little - just run sandpaper over them - then paint over with primer and paint them with semi or hi-gloss paint.

you'll need to roughen up the surface of the cabinets -- sanding would be the best bet -- but primer MIGHT work -- try it on on of the doors. Id sand them. it would be the best looking afterward. -- good luck!

i think you need to sand them first. Otherwise the paint won't stick, unless you buy like a plastic spray maybe
