I am a senior in high school and I CANNOT sleep! My problem is not staying asleep. That rarely happens to me. I just can't fall asleep. I read something somewhere that said that my bedroom should be a place for nothing but sleep. But I have a computer phone and tv in my room so I am always in it and normally no where else. I even eat in my room. I have no chairs so whenever I'm watching tv or am on the phone I'm in my bed. So should I get rid of the things in my room and use it only for sleeping???

That might help. You also might want to establish a bedtime routine and stick to it. I.E. Take a warm not hot or cold bath or shower with lavender scented soap, then drink a cup of chamomile or sleepy time tea and then relax for 20 minutes begin to shut down your thinking processes etc. Also you might want to consider cutting caffine earlier in the day like no caffine after 4 or 5 pm if you have a 9 or 10 bed time. This way it has a chance to run out of your system before you try to go to sleep.

O.K. first if possible, get a desk & a chair. Try NOT to use your bed for anything but sleeping in. This may sound odd, but again, if possible place your bed on a solid wall (no windows) as far from the door as you can. If your room is cluttered, try to organize it to make it less cluttered.
Then go to the store (Wal-Mart, whatever) & purchase a suppliment called MELATONIN. Get the 3 mg. tablets. Also get some BIGELOW - SWEET DREAMS tea.
45 minutes to one hour before bed, take ONE melatonin & sip a cup of the tea (without sugar - if you need a sweetner, use honey). I have always been a night person, but with a family I had to force myself to change my sleep patterns. This has helped me a great deal.
The Melatonin is natural, your body releases it naturally into the body in response to the changing of the light, so it is not a chemical that is a sleep agent or drug. You will only be using it to suppliment your own bodies production in case it is not getting enough.
This does NOT make you just DROP OFF!!! it just makes you tired!! I have not one single time ever woke up in the morning feeling like I was hung over or wrung out. Just give it a try. If it works for you then GREAT!!! If not, I guess you will only be back where you started.
GOOD LUCK!!!

I have trouble sleeping too and the usual tips don't help me,but you should try them first. I'm a flat out insomniac and not only do strange sleeping habits run in my family, but I've got a few other health problems up my sleeve. So if all the other tips, like : Going to bed at the same time, using destressing techniques, reading, Ect. don't work then talk to your Physician. I would suggest staying away from sleeping pills that keep you asleep for 8 hours and try for the ones that just help you get to sleep. Good luck. Sleep is important.

I think it's ok to have those things in your room... but it's not ok to eat on your bed. Watch tv on your bed... I think that's what they mean when living the bedroom for sleep only. As long as you have a desk, you can use it for those little daily activities... non sleep related.

It could be your bed though, uncomfortable beds lead to a restles night. Try getting one of those temperpiditc matts that they sell at Target and wallmart. Much less expensive than buying a mattress and much more comfy than just a spring mattress.

Also try getting some more exercise in the day...

Take walk after school and the like...

Good luck!

Don't take sleeping pills---that should be a last resort. You need to try to bring in a chair or some other kind of seat so that your bed is only for sleeping. You can do other things in your room, but reserve the bed for sleep only. And try not to have anything on while you are trying to go to sleep--no TV, no radio, etc. Just let it be quiet so you don't have any extra stimuli to keep your brain going. No reading in bed either!!! Good luck and hope you can catch some Zzzzs soon!

Though sleeping pills would seem to be the answer. I would suggest, taking a few things out at a time. Or, even turning things off completely at night. Yes, your room should be a place that's tranquil and easy to sleep in, but As a young girl it doesn't mean take everything away. I would start small, if it seems to help. Then Then take it away. If not, no biggie. You can always put it back and try other methods Good Luck

That would be a great start. Next you can take one -two benedryl about an hour before bed. This should make you drowsy and you can drift off to sleep. I'd suggest just one to start to see how it works. Benedryl is not habit forming and it will make you drowsy. Now I would suggest making a night time diary and write down your thoughts of the day and the things you need to do tomorrow etc... so you can put them away until the next day. This should help unclutter your mind so you will relax and fall asleep.
Hope this helps.

NO!, Your room should reflect your lifestyle, and if the TV, computer and phone is what that maybe don't change it or you will feel pretty darn bad! LOL, I would say to go to the doctor and ask him for a few samples of cyclobenzaprine(write it down if you need to) this is NOT a sleeping aide but a muscle relaxer that helps you not be so tense and relaxes the muscles Cyclobenzaprine can be used for other uses such as a quick sleep aide but do NOT use them if you don't need them use them sparely. Yes, I would put the computer/TV in another room. Make sure your not consuming caffeine before you go to bed. Don't take sleeping pills see a doctor before you do anything stupid. Exercising is suppose to help you sleep through the night I would get more active if I we're you.

Your body has gotten used to doing normal day things in your room, even on your bed (TV). This will effect your sleep. It would be best to move some of your Activities out of your room. And use it mainly at night for sleeping, expecially your bed. Another thing you can do it exercise before sleeping. If you wear yourself out, you will sleep more deeply. Hope that this helps you!
