My grandmother has been ordering a lot of unprecious metals and I'm pretty sure she has been alive since before I was born. How can I tell if she is an alchemist? And has she possibly found an elixir that will prolong life indefinitely?

Did you ever think that maybe in her older age she has stared collecting things she never got to collect while she was raising one of your parents? Why would you immediately assume she is mixing up some brew? Why don't you just go to her and ask her?!?
