I understand the reasons behind hijab, but why the niquab? or Purdah? Is it really neccesary for women to live in seclusion or is this another cultural thing and not an Islamic practice?

Peace Be With You,
Debra

Hi.
Purdah is an Islamic practice. A misconception by alot of people is that these women are oppressed. They are not oppressed.
Purdah is a sign of modesty. Women who are dressed modestly don't attract attention from men.
Notice the increase in rape.....the reason for this is due to the way most women are dressed. A girl wearing a mini skirt may be commented on by men , whereas people ignore a girl in purdah.
Women are not to live in seclusion....note that Islam does not teach that.....this is a cultural thing and most people go to extremes .
Niqab is not a requirement ....I believe that it is worn to cover a womans features....(I'm still kind of unsure on that one). Alot of woman also feel that they should make some scarifices for their religion(when they get religious) and start to wear the niqab.
Hope that helped.

May allah bless us all.

yes it is very necessary to wear purdah in islam. purdah is ordained in islam not for seclusion for women but to safeguard their dignity & respect.

Purdah is not only covering the body from head to toe, but to be modest at all times and not ot reveal the body shapes & curves.

Men's purdah is that they shall not look at any other women expect the one's in their relatives as ordained by islam like mother, sister, wife, aunts, etc. even men shall not speak in such a way so as to attract other women.

the main intention of purdah in islam is to avoid the social evils that couldcreep in to the society if these precautions are not taken.

and allah knows better

Islam requires that you be modestly clothed. Some Muslim women I know only wear the Muslim garb as a show. True Islam requires much more. A true Muslim woman would be kind and loving to all she meets,,,spreading true peace and true love everywhere she goes.

That is cultural.

The Quran orders women to not draw attention to their beauty, and to draw their garments about themselves.

It is according to Hadith that women should cover all their bodies except the hands and face. During hajj, women are not allowed to cover their faces. If face covering were obligatory, this would not make sense.

No it's not required. Some do it for "extra credit", so to speak.
