Whenever I pet my cat for a long time she will eventually grab my hand with her claws (not too hard) and bite me (also not too hard). She never stops purring and will let me keep petting her, but she moves her tail around like she is mad. I don't understand. Does anyone know why she would do this?

Sometimes cats just get tired of the attention--the same way you would if someone was stroking you for hours. She's saying, "Enough already!"

Give her lots of love, but don't overdo it.

I once read a theory by a pet psychologist that cats end up with a conflict under these situations. They enjoy the attention and stroking for so long as it comforting and reminds them of the attention their mother gave them when they were kittens. But after a while the old cat remembers that it is grown up now and the aloofness and arrogance finally wins through and the old moggy gets pretty annoyed that it has allowed this kind of soppy, un catlike behavior to get the better of it, so it decides to tell you that it’s had enough and its all your fault.

My female cat also does this to me. Cats are independent and she's just making her wishes known. This is to make sure you still know your place and that she is in charge. You pet her as long as she wants you to, when she wants you to. Then when she's done, so are you.

My tom doesn't do this. But if you touch his belly when he's laying on his back you risk losing your hand. (or foot)

My lady cat does that too! She likes to sleek her tail. i think of along with her, that's in hassle-free terms a exciting ingredient to do. The happier she is, the greater she swishes that tail :) Cats are merely so cool.

No offense, but she's a cat. They do that. Our cat does the same thing. Its the first house cat for my wife and she just can't understand that this behavior is normal. It is akin to a baby crying and pooping in a diaper: it is just what happens.

I think its their nature. If you see two cats who are related, they will be all lovey with eachother, then all of a sudden start fighting, then back to being all lovey again. My female does this, and when she does this, its her way of saying, "I like you petting me, but I'm getting bored of it or I'm getting irritated now, so you'd better stop if you want to keep your hand."
