I have a really bad nail biting habit. I do it when I'm nervous, bored, tired-- all the time. Today I had to get some neosporin and a band aid today for the first time ever because I bit my nail so deeply. Are their any techniques or procedures I could do to help decrease the habit?

I do get regular manicures (acrylic) to try and break the habit. It has never worked, I just end up biting those off too. It's been a habbit for going on 5 years now.

My kid used to do that for years. The nail polish didnt work. They'd just slowly work at it, bit by bit, until they got it all off, and start bitting again. They eventually did stop, but it was when they started thinking about how dirty a habit it is and decided to fight the urge on their own.

I used to bite my nails all the time. Was a 15 year habit sense I was a child. Chewed on the poor things constantly and I always did it when I was upset about something and then continued because the nails had rough edges. I tried everything too. Tabasco sauce, the nasty nail polish, manicures, putting a rubber band on my wrist and snapping it every time I caught myself... nothing worked. What did happen is I got rid of a lot of the things in my life I was stressing about. After I met my now husband I woke up one day and I'd stopped biting my nails. So I guess my suggestion is maybe you are biting because you are stressed and getting ride of some of those stresses may help. Or you might just stop one day. I'm not sure what really went on,but I did just stop.

Try (If you have any nail left) using those press on nails and every time you attempt to bite your nails think. Make believe an imaginary friend is helping you smack your hands out of your mouth. Remember you touch Everything - so by you putting your fingers in your mouth you are transferring a lot of bacteria. Keep your fingers out of your mouth for health reasons as well!
Good Luck

put a calendar in your room . and give a big caption like . the days i didnt bite my nail. suppose you start from 14 sept 2006 and luckily you dont bite for the whole day. cross this date and cross all the days on which you didnt bite your nail. eventually you calendar will be full of crosses and you will love not to bite to get another date crossed. by the way i have tried it myself and proved 100 % successful.

It may sound wacky, but you may have a chronic low blood sugar condition, causing the nerves, boredom and tiredness. Your brain may make you cause yourself pain to stimulate adrenaline - which raises the level of sugar in the blood stream.

If this sounds weird enough to check out, check out the low blood sugar article at www.hufa.org.

If you want to e-mail me back, I will tell you some of the ways my body used to let me know it was low - until I was diagnosed, and started eating more often of the right things.

There is that, and I'd also recommend seeking some sort of counseling - as nail biting that severe is usually a sign of some sort of trauma, and a counselor can help you work through whatever it might be.

remind yourself that you are chewing on your hands that have contact with filth and germs, ingesting it may not be the best for you, keep them trimmed and short, i used to bite my nails when i wouldnt clip them, also look at yourself in the mirror, other people see you that way when you are chewing on your hand, do you want to be seen like that?
