My dogs bark at everything and anyone who walk by. We just moved into a neighborhood and want to be considerate and keep the dogs from barking. Any advice on breaking this habit? I won't consider shock collars, they're cruel!
I've heard something about a spray bottle. what do you put in it?

The best and most permanet barking management is to teach them the SIT command...Each time they bark, command them to 'sit' and soon they will quit...It doesn't seem worth it to them, as it takes their mind off the 'barking', and onto the 'obeying'.
SIT
Holding a treat in your left hand just above the pup's nose, gently rest your right hand on pup's rump.
Slowly move the treat in an upward motion while applying gentle pressure to the rump. ( you don't want to push hard because if you do the dog will sit every time someone touches him and this is not good for competitive obedience)
as soon as pup sits say in a very happy excited tone "GOOD SIT" and give the treat.
Repeat exercise 7x. then take a play break and move on to something else.
very young pups should not train for more than a half hour each day
every time you put food bowl down or give a treat give the sit command, and wait for the sit. then once pup sits give treat or food down.
DO NOT move on to something new until pup has the new command down pat.

If you've just moved your dogs are following their natural instincts and warning you whenever they see a danger & everything seems like a danger as it is a new place. You need to let them know that you do not need them to do this by not reacting to them barking & instead distracting them entirely to show that you are not concerned with whatever is going by. When they see you are not concerned they will not longer feel the need to bark at it. So... when they bark make a high pitched noise like, beep, beep. I know it sounds silly but as their master the dogs will be more interested in you making this odd sound than whatever it was that was drawing their attention before. Keep it up until they stop & pay you their attention. When they come to you to see what's the matter praise them with a treat or lots of fuss. Whilst a spray bottle isn't cruel at all it is a negative way of changing behaviour. Some dogs do not respond to it & some aren't bothered by it in the slightest - I've even seen some drink water sprayed at them like it's a game & they enjoy it! If you use the distraction method you are postively changing behaviour by praising them when they focus on you & not the surroundings, rather than punishing bad behaviour with a spray gun. I would reccomend a book called The Dog Listener. It is full of very positive ways to train & get a closer reationship with your dog by not punishing bad behaviour & re-enforcing good behaviour. Good luck.

I agree, I think the idea of a shock collar is awful. My parents had this problem with their new dog and when they tried this it worked : take an empty soda can and put a few coins or unpopped corn kernels inside it. Then tape the can shut. When the dog barks at people walking by, shake the can. The noise is unpleasant for the dog but not very loud. It has really helped them and sometimes they even bring it with him on walks, but he need the reminder less and less as time passes because he is remembering what happens. The spray bottle is okay but might not work with all dogs, it didn''t really help much when my parents did it. Good luck with your dog!

I make sure to go outside with my small dogs so they wont be afraid, and when they start to bark I take them back inside. When inside I make them stay away from windows if they are barking. keep showing them what to do and they will catch on to what your teaching them. Just don't do trauma, my oldest dog freaks and hides when I bring out a spray cleaner bottle.

My puppy has always been sprayed with water when she barks. Now at 4 months, if she sees the water bottle come out she stops immediately.

You can squirt them with water to stop them. Here is the problem...If someone breaks into your house don't you want your dog to alert you? What if someone is looking in your windows or drops by unexpectedly wouldn't you want him to bark. This is the dogs job, in the wild that's how they alert each other of danger. He is protecting his home and family. If you deter him from barking he wont bark at all. Is this what you want?

I'm VERY glad that u will not shock your dog. Too many people do that.
Put water un the squirt bottle. Also I heard lemon juice makes them stop. If you don't mind your dog smelling like lemon, I would put some dulited lemon jusice in the water bottle and squirt his mouth.
Hoped I helped Some! :)
