start your numbering 1,2,3

option 1
select your 1,2,3 and down in the lower right of the selection, is a little square. left click and hold that and drag down.

option 2
start with 1
then in the cell below type
=A1+1
tada.. you'll get 2
copy that formula, and then paste it as far as you wanna go

Those numbers down the side are used in formulas to tell the program which cell you are referring to when making a formula. Kind of like chess in a sense. The same goes for the letters at the top. These do not print when you are finished with your project, just the open cells. You can re-size the row or column of cells by clicking on it in the grey area and then right clicking and choosing the option to re-size it. As far as numbering goes you just have to number them yourself. Everyone seems to be on the right page there in there answers for you. Just type in a couple or all the numbers or click on the black box and drag. The drag feature works for days or months too, it will continue to climb for you. Or the formula will work too. I presume, by Auto # you mean that the row number should automatically appear in sequence in Column A if something is typed in Column B.

If that is correct
In cell A1 type 1
In cell A2 type =If(B2<>"",A1+1,"")

Drag this formula down column A

As you type into colum B the auto number will appear in column A. However it will not work if you leave some rows blank.

In the first row, type 1
In the second, type 2
Next, select the 1 and the 2 and click the little black dot in the bottom right of the selection box and drag it down to wherever you want...it will automatically number the rows for you.

The formula =row() should work for you.
