Try

Laurence Block - Matt Scudder (NYC Private Eye) series.

Both Jonathan and Faye Kellerman have good ones.

J. A. Jance - Joanna Brady series.

Tony Hillerman - Leaphorn and Chee series.

For laughs, Dorothy Gillman - Mrs Pollifax. More spy/adventure than mystery

For laughs The Cat Who series by L J Braun. (the last 4 or 5 have been a disappointment)

Brother Cadfael series.

Sue Grafton - A is for Alibi is the first of her alphabet novels (she's up to S)

Start at the beginning of each series, some of the characters build over time and you need to see them early in their development.

Anything by Lee Child is good. His Reacher character is one to follow through all his books. Even better than Alex Cross.
John Sandford's Lucas Davenport books (Rules of Prey, Mind Prey, Everything Prey) are great reads too!

Check out the author Alex Kava. I've read every book she has written except for her newest one (I'm cheap, I wait till they're out on paperback). Several of them have the same main character, Maggie ODell. I get attached to characters, so I like when an author uses the same character in different books.

P.S. Maggie Shayne is also awesome!!! Check her out.
