Europeans see Americans as right wing religious nuts often, but in reality, as a Canadian, I see Americans as pretty wild, liberal people. They rule the porn industry, and how many hundreds of thousands or more are directly in that industry? Many many for sure.....you cant be a prude or a puritan if you are going for a ganxbanx! The US is a very modern society and some would like to see it have the values and morals of yesteryear.....if the youth today don't give their elders respect, their own kids will have absolutely no respect and no manners....it will be the end of the modern era and the beginning of chaos...every man for himself.

Puritans where a colonial people who lived in the 1600s-1700s. Americans have since moved wildly away from this line of thinking. The term "puritanical" now has a negative connatation hinting at "backward" or "prudish" behavior.

I think this is an unfair dipiction of a very proud and hardworking people.

The Pilgrims were Puritans who were escaping religious persecution in England. They called themselves Puritans because they thought they followed a pure form of Christianity. Not many Americans today follow their creed. Americans are not cosed minded. We love an open forum where any idea can be expressed. That's why a forum like Yahoo Questions comes from America.

No, Americans are not called Puritans (gosh, the Puritans would roll over in their graves if they heard someone call modern day American culture "Puritan"). The Puritans were an early American religious group (one group among many different groups of immigrants). They came to America to escape religious persecution in England. Unlike the Separatists, who also escaped to America to avoid religious persecution in England, they wanted to "purify" the church of England rather than separate from it, hence the name, "Puritans." Their progenitors today would be those of the more conservative Reformed groups. Some well-known Puritans include Jonathan Edwards, Anne Bradstreet and John Owen.

It was the puritans that came over on the Mayflower and several since then. One of the things they chose to leave was the Christmas celebration. A lot of things like that they were wanting to "purify" the protestant religion (the church of england doctrines) from.

The puritans was short lived so to speak, so I am anxious to see who here in America considers themselves 'Puritan'

Americans are Puritanical and the evidence is the fact the FCC fined a tv network millions of dollars for a millisecond exposure of Janet Jackson's ugly breast, yet allows any form of gore & violence to be freely shown.

Muslims are likewise Puritianical so they should get along very well with right wing Christians.

Who are you, Hester Prynne? I don't think anyone's been called a Puritan in America since we moved our toilets indoors....that was a small sect of right-wing Christians who immigrated to, and proceeded to burn, America, one witch at a time. If you think Americans are closed-minded, then you better start reconsidering your portrait of a typical American, who today is one or more of the following: British, Haitian, Indian, Mexican, Native American, African, Japanese, Inuit, Polynesian, Chinese, Slovak, German, Irish, Welsh, Swedish, Dutch, Syrian, Spanish, Iraqi.....if our minds were closed, then our doors would be, too.

The original English settlers in Massachussetts were known as "Puritans" due to their deisre to lead a rigorously strict life in accordance with their own religious beliefs and views.

Alas, most of our "moral" mindset is influenced by this.

We're called Puritans, are you serious? With the stuff we pump out on TV and in movies, not to mention that our advertising uses sex to sell everything?
