have worked out most of my life. but I just graduated from college and gym memberships are really $$$. Is there any home gym stuff that is worthwhile( programs and what not) the one I am looking at is 557 for a whole 15months if I pay upfront. also I am disciplined enough to work out outside of a gym. I am looking to improve my cardio health and increase muscle tone. I basically just want to tone up.

The gym membership is only worth it if you use it. The same with buying home equipment. I know a lot of those home gyms become dust catchers.

I think the gym membership is worth it. It's a lot easier *not* to work out when you're at home. If you schedule yourself time at the gym you won't have kids, the computer, the phone, or a your bed to help you put off your workout. They have a lot of leeway on the price and if they think they've almost got you they'll do what they can to lure you in. I bet you can get your membership for a lot less - or at least get them to throw in a free locker or something. lol

Anyway, I wouldn't go out and get any expensive home equipment. You can get a great home workout with some dumbells and a pair of running shoes and if you find you're having a hard time getting yourself to work out at home, you haven't lost much.

most clubs like ballys or golds offer some sort of introductory offer that you can take advantage of. most have like free 7 day passes where you can check out the facilties and what not. what also works really well are local gyms, not the big boys. smaller gyms often have better pricing for members than ballys or golds. might wanna look them up in the phonebook or something. if you're really in the market for a home gym sort of thing, get whatever is the cheapest but sturdiest too. some can go for around $300 usually.

What the hell kind of gym are you going to. I go to 24hour fitness in Colorado Springs and it's only 19 bucks month so that would be $218 for 15 months. I suggest doing some more research. Working out at home kinda makes people lazy and eventually some stop doing it. I go to the gym because it gets me out of the house for a while.

The only reason to get a gym membership is if you are looking at meeting new people, socializing, or to throw your money away. Get an apartment with a gym membership or find a friend that will let you use theirs. You'll save a lot of money that way.

Shop around for a gym... even at local colleges. Don't neglect the YMCA.

But it is far easier to be motivated to work out regularly if you hit the gym as opposed to the home gym scene.

Good luck!

What are your goals?
To develop cardiovascular fitness or to develop strength or both?

You can develop cardio by simply running.
Weight lifting is better done at the gym.

Also, what motivates you?

For example, I get bored on a treadmill after 5 minutes, but I can run for miles outside. Even if I quit running, I still have to walk back.

Some people turn on their Ipod and run for miles on the treadmill.

Would you benefit from a workout partner or do you prefer to workout alone?

If you use the gym, more then once or twice a week it's useful.
I join in chicago xsport for 18 months at 390.00 that's less than a dollar a day.

Check out www.mattfurey.com He's got some pretty interesting stuff that you do without weights or equipment. I travel a lot so I find it useful for getting in a decent workout in my hotel room.
