SST stands for Serum Seperator Tube: They are used to seperate the serum(liquid portion) from the blood cells. Once you fill the tube you let sit for 30 minutes so the blood will clot. Then you centriguge the tube for 15 minutes and the plug in the tube seperates the liquid. The yellowish serum will be at the top of the tube and the blood cells will be at the bottom with this plug in between.

SST means SERUM SEPARATOR TUBE but i have not seen a speckled top tube because our SST is yellow top. The one with a gel like inside which will separate the serum from the clotted part of the blood.
