There's often no cure for schizophrenia, but by working closely with a psychiatrist and other mental health professionals, schizophrenia can be managed successfully — especially with an early diagnosis. Fortunately, newer medications continue to make this poorly understood disorder more manageable.

After they exhaust every other option and hop you up on more drugs than a CVS can prescribe. "Trying them out." to see what works best and not at all.

Sometimes it is quite obvious and therefore easy to treat and diagnose but other times it is rather hard to pin point a disease that is often degenerative when untreated but alters and changes with the incorporation of the wrong kinds of meds. Many different symptoms shared by many other conditions are involved in actual schitzophrenic disorder. As far as a diagnosis code goes. I believe their are hundreds and hundreds of different codes for each of the different kinds of schitzophrenia manefestations out there.

Paranoid schitzophrenia

schitzophrania violent tendencies

nervous schotzophrenia non/violent

Paranoid with mania

Catatonic schitzophrenia

Ect... etc...

Schizophrenia is usually diagnosed when there is some form of hallucinations. When it is diagnosed is usually after an individual starts to notice these strange hallucination and seeks psychological help. A more definite definition of schizophrenia would be to say that it is a psychiatric diagnosis of a mental disorder that is generally charactorized by various impariments to perception of reality, the impairments additionally generally includes some form of social or occupational dysfunction. In other words, schizophrenia results in hallucinations that cause difficulties in an individuals life.

It is diagnosed by the DSM (American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). The current version of the DSM is the DSM-IV-TR. Below is a copied and pasted example of the conditions necessary for schizophrenia:

--------------------

Diagnostic criteria for Schizophrenia

A. Characteristic symptoms: Two (or more) of the following, each present for a significant portion of time during a 1-month period (or less if successfully treated):

(1) delusions

(2) hallucinations

(3) disorganized speech (e.g., frequent derailment or incoherence)

(4) grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior

(5) negative symptoms, i.e., affective flattening, alogia, or avolition

Note: Only one Criterion A symptom is required if delusions are bizarre or hallucinations consist of a voice keeping up a running commentary on the person's behavior or thoughts, or two or more voices conversing with each other.

B. Social/occupational dysfunction: For a significant portion of the time since the onset of the disturbance, one or more major areas of functioning such as work, interpersonal relations, or self-care are markedly below the level achieved prior to the onset (or when the onset is in childhood or adolescence, failure to achieve expected level of interpersonal, academic, or occupational achievement).

C. Duration: Continuous signs of the disturbance persist for at least 6 months. This 6-month period must include at least 1 month of symptoms (or less if successfully treated) that meet Criterion A (i.e., active-phase symptoms) and may include periods of prodromal or residual symptoms. During these prodromal or residual periods, the signs of the disturbance may be manifested by only negative symptoms or two or more symptoms listed in Criterion A present in an attenuated form (e.g., odd beliefs, unusual perceptual experiences).

D. Schizoaffective and Mood Disorder exclusion: Schizoaffective Disorder and Mood Disorder With Psychotic Features have been ruled out because either (1) no Major Depressive, Manic, or Mixed Episodes have occurred concurrently with the active-phase symptoms; or (2) if mood episodes have occurred during active-phase symptoms, their total duration has been brief relative to the duration of the active and residual periods.

E. Substance/general medical condition exclusion: The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, a medication) or a general medical condition.

F. Relationship to a Pervasive Developmental Disorder: If there is a history of Autistic Disorder or another Pervasive Developmental Disorder, the additional diagnosis of Schizophrenia is made only if prominent delusions or hallucinations are also present for at least a month (or less if successfully treated).

Classification of longitudinal course (can be applied only after at least 1 year has elapsed since the initial onset of active-phase symptoms):

Episodic With Interepisode Residual Symptoms (episodes are defined by the reemergence of prominent psychotic symptoms); also specify if: With Prominent Negative Symptoms

Episodic With No Interepisode Residual Symptoms

Continuous (prominent psychotic symptoms are present throughout the period of observation); also specify if: With Prominent Negative Symptoms

Single Episode In Partial Remission; also specify if: With

Prominent Negative Symptoms
Single Episode In Full Remission
Other or Unspecified Pattern

As to whether or not it is a life long condition, to a very large extent psychology doesn't know necessarily the cause of schizophrenia nor do we know the duration of the disorder.

We do know that there are various cocktails of medications that can be taken that will eliminate symptoms, or to moderate symptoms to a tolerable level. Often times however, individuals can become aware of their condition and simply cope on their own with no medication or further treatment necessary.

Yes, it is. But with today's new technology's and drugs it's not so hard to manage. There have been some complete recoveries, but I think these were by people who had a sudden schizophrenic break caused by drug use and such. It's not usual to completely recover though.

there're different subtypes in schizophrenia. some that are diagnosed early have good prognosis, meaning there is high chance of recovery. The subtype that gradually or progressively kicks in has very poor prognosis.
