Good question.

Such scanty evidence as there is suggests that it takes more than 500 years but less than 2000 years for a migrant group to change pigmentation to adapt to the climate of the area migrated to.

Much more likely, culturally, though, that African- and notAfrican-Americans will interbreed sufficiently to homogenise the population long before this question could be answered.

LMAO... ummmm... no. We may not be living right next to the equator... but I really don't see that happening. African Americans come in many different shades of brown. And some as pale as white people. For a whole race of people to be able to evolve into something else, basically for one the climate would have to change drastically. The US would have to be frozen over for thousands of years for such drastic changes to take place within the African- American race. Or any other race for that matter. So, to answer your question... NO. Or at least not within our lifetime.

It takes about 2000 years of closely-spaced generations to evolve lighter skin in the population. It happens because people need sunlight to create certain vitamins and be healthy. Far from the equator, those with lighter skin are healthier and make more babies and the lightest of their children is the healthiest, and so on. No one alive will change their skin color before they die, unless they have $$$ and some kind of weird complex.

I've seen many shades already. I'm sure that they will eventually be pretty light, at least some. Ever heard the term "Red Bone" ?

I don't know if they'll "become white," but chances are their skin will grow lighter in appearance, for they will no longer need so much melanin to protect them from UV rays.
