His mortality became more apparant and he turned to religion in fear. That's how most people find religion. People are afraid to die and religion offers a way to alleviate that fear. And even know atheists know that it's fake, when your close to death fear can overpower logic and reasoning.

i am an atheist, so why would i go back? does not make sense. There must be a reason why I have a terminal illness. or attacked by a disease. no way will i go back to believing in a god!
I only believe if people live by good principles they will be good consistently. anything else that happens to them just is co incidence and that's life! Life is unpredicatable. it has nothing to do with not believing in God. I look at people praying as meditating which helps a person to focus and do the right things. For me I know the difference between right and wrong ..is it rocket science? no...you just have to use your brain that's all.

I will not start believing in religion due to illness. Until I personally meet this so called god, I will not believe. If someone else changes their mind, that is fine. It is their choice.

Belief or non belief in God should be an internal experience. One could feel it anytime from within. The kind you are referring to, it is a weakness - something to lean on to, when nothing else works in life - that's not a good thing or a bad thing. Its just an incomplete experience of God.

why do you confine this question to atheists alone? people who preach 24/7 the principles of religion, when they are in distress resort to calling god names.in the case referred to above that person is not at all an atheist he is simply an opportunist and an escapist and a hypocrite.one should adhere to the principles till he dies.

I've heard these arguments again and again. As I wrecked my motorcycle in college I didn't scream for Jesus to save me. As my helicopter went down in the DMZ, I didn't scream for Jesus to save me. As mortar rounds went off around me I didn't scream for Jesus to save me. As snipers fired on my position I didn't scream for Jesus to save me. As a cop I didn't cross myself and say Hail Mary's before going in after a suspect, and in five times in the cardiac unit I haven't screamed for Jesus to save me. There are lots of atheists in foxholes just so you know.
Religionists all seem to think that atheists secretly believe but are just being rebellious, and when push comes to shove we'll drop to our knees and beg Jesus to save us. The fact is most of us have become convinced through long struggle and study that claims of divinity and the supernatural are not true, and we have not come to this conclusion flippantly or casually. So I would no more beg Jesus to save me from illness and death than I would beg Superman, Green Lantern and Papa Smurf to come to my rescue.

A "right" path?
So, by that logic you believe atheists are already on the wrong path?
That doesn't seem all that fair.

its probably ok I think
If this God fellow is anything like they say he is, he would help the atheist anyway I think.
Yeah, hypocrite
Any God who wouldn't help, isn't worth much anyway.

I dub him as "SCARED". Fear is what either brings most people to religion or keeps them in it.
