To clarify, there are two fairly aggressive pit bull males that run loose in my neighborhood. They crap and piss in my yard, as well as others around here. If I had a full grown, male Rhodesian Ridgeback could IT hold its own against these dogs? I want them out of my yard without having to be cruel (like poisoning or shooting with pellet gun). Do Ridgebacks have a domineering side to them. Basically, can they protect their owners property?

Well, the answer is that yes, Ridgebacks are a pretty powerful dog and quite fearless. But the better answer is that you need to call animal control or the cops. It is not legal for random dogs to be running around on your property and rather than getting a difficult to train, reactive, powerful breed of dog who may or may not be able to hold its own against two full grown pit bulls, why not just call the cops?

It depends on the dog. But I wouldn't want to take the chance that the Rodesian Ridgeback could "hold it's own" against one, not to mention TWO pit bulls. Next time you see the dogs, call the police. Take pictures of the dogs and hand them in to the authorities. Document all the days and times that you see the dogs on your property. Give that to the police. They will eventually find out who owns the dogs or pick them up if they are strays.

To say that "this isn't about dog fighting" is untrue. Because that's exactly what you are saying. I am sure there will be doggie bloodshed if you do what you are contemplating.......

No the poor dog would not have a chance especially if there are two of them. Dogs are more aggressive as a team its a "pack mentality". Call animal control or talk to their owners. The Ridgebacks were bred to hunt lions but as a pack, your plan would not work only cause more problems.

Getting ANY dog to protect your home from aggressive pits is a very BAD idea. While some RR's can be quite domineering, most are calm happy pets. If you get a dog to 'take on' these dogs you are as bad as the idiots who have the aggressive pits.
(and I am NOT anti-pit, idiots who get them as status symbols than cannot control their dogs and let them loose are putting the bad name to these dogs)

Call animal control if you are worried about the dogs in your neighborhood.

Call animal control. If they don't show, keep calling them until they've had enough of you. For goodness sake, don't teach a good dog to be aggressive because of two dogs that have owners that don't want to take responsibility for them. Get the police involved too, tell them they are aggressive (not fairly) and they will come and investigate, if they are aggressive the police should make sure it is taken care of. AND, if you can find out who the owners are, give that to the police as well.

take note here as many people have mention RR were developed to hunt lions IN PACKS. therefore they are NOT prone to fight with other dogs (otherwise you would HAVE a pack, just a big dog fight) Go to any field trial & you'll see 3 compleatly strange to each other ridgbacks out on the field togher with no fighting. Also most hounds have a poor sense of property - they may defend you but not your house/yard.. In fact he's be FAR more likely to wander off rabbit hunting (and hope he doesn't subistitute the neighbors cats)
Fence your yard You would with the RR anyway.

Ridgebacks are very strong dogs bred for hunting lions in Africa, but they are most powerful in packs. Having one would not solve your problem, though, only result in vet bills. And what happens when he doesn't kill the pit, just maims him. Are you going to let him suffer? Or what if the pit maims your dog? Just call animal control. They'll take care of everything at no cost to you.

Call animal control. No dog has the heart of a pitbull. Not to mention two of them. Dont get another dog to be hurt by the dogs or hurt the other dogs.Dont give people another reason to say pits will kill anything.

Violence is not the answer here. Don't you love your Rhodesian?

I would suggest you call the ANimal shelter or local police and let them know there are pit bulls running around.

All I can say is be careful the PitBulls fight to the finish.
