..then why can vets "double" dip... My problem is that every Vet I know that is receiving disability checks are working full time.

...civilians, cannot get disability and work at all, secondly, they will never receive SSI and SSID.

...It appears that the reason social security is going insolvent, is that now every military vet that is aging, is turning that into a second retirement check and that they are giving them double money at the expense of decreasing or cojmpletely not paying the civilian at age 66. Afterall Vets can retire at 40 and have pleanty of time to get a second and or third retirement for themselves...
....please note, My problem is not with concurrent combat duty pay..

.. I have heard they may put the Veterians disablity under the social security dept., meaning they will have to qualify the same way that civilians have to qualify...I say "to shah!!"

P.S. This is not a debate regarding social security. This about disability.
..I agree that if you are a Vet and pay ssi, at age 66 you should deserve what you paid in like civilians, which means you have to have worked the last 5 quarters, before you can qualify... to receive it at 66.Unfortunately Vets, get $$ at age 40 with no qualification regarding continueing to work until you are 66 to receive ssi. If they worked after they retire at 40 then they receive SSI for the time they worked after 40 and a certain amount of what was paid into ssi when they were in the military counts towards their total qualifying amount....what is wrong with that?

sglmon, the laws have changed probably since you retired.

...Civilians or qualified military, half to have worked the last 5 years before they turn 66 to qualify for any amount of SSI other than the welfare amount to which is subject to indigent qualifications.
... We are an aging country, and everyone needs to be taken care of. ..so maybe we shouldn't give checks to people who work full time, "You Think"???

One of many valid observations of the contradictions in the US. Many of the same people would howl bloody murder if it was even suggested that the average citizen should get the same level of benefits.

my husband will most likely get some disability when he retires from the military in about 10 yrs. Most airborne guys do due to the damages that occur from jumping over such a long course of time.

He will also work full time since he'll only be in his early 40's. Then he'll retire, get social security and at least one retirement pay and maybe social security as well.

He (and all the other vets) deserve it.

By the way - the disability doesn't come from social security disability. Probably the reason they can get both.

Are you telling me, the Retired Service Member, who paid into Social Security ALL the years I was in the Military that I can NOT get any benefits when I turn Retirement age? That is NOT double dipping by ANY stretch of the TERMS!!!!

Military people the same ammount as you into Social Security. Why shouldn't they get it? If I work 20 years for the state Police force and 20 years for the State Fire Department, why shouldn't I get both retirements?

Because they know how to work the system. There are many vets who deserve va compensation. Most veterans have paid into social security and are entitled to it.
People who receive disability from the VA have to prove it and it is not an easy process. Check out the benefits section of the VA website to find out all the different injuries, diseases and conditions you can get disability for.

You are so wrong! Mililtary still pays social security taxes and when they reach retirement then they are entitled to that retirement. That would be like saying that if I put into a 401k that when I reached retirement that I shouldn't get social security. The military has earned them both!

Where did you get such crazy ideas? Disability has nothing to do with Social Security. You are insulting to all Vets with such wide sweeping & insultingly incorrect assumptions. When someone is injured saving your life & freedom, you can at least have enough basic respect to give them the benefit of the doubt. I respect & trust Veterans. I do, however, suspect your motives. Shame on you!

Your fact are untrue. I recieve disability for being legaly blind and I work a full time job. I have never been in the military. You can work but for ever dollar you make over what you get on disibility they take 50 cents away from your disability check.
