Maintain a regular bed and wake time schedule, including weekends.
Create a sleep-conducive environment that is dark, quiet, comfortable and cool.
Finish eating at least two to three hours before your regular bedtime.
Avoid alcohol close to bedtime. It can lead to disrupted sleep later in the night.

There are sleep aides such as Valerian that can be purchased at the health food store. There are reports on the Internet that say that older people have more difficulty with sleep due to a lower production of Melatonin. You might research whether you need to replace this.

Schiff has Melatonin with L-theanine at Wal-Mart. L-theanine is useful to quiet the mind especially if you have stress or anxiety. But, it is probably important to determine what is causing your problem and what is the best treatment for that problem.

Ambien is a good prescription treatment, but my personal opinion is that most people don't need to go that route. There is a time-release form that may work better if you are up the entire night.

Go to bed as late as possible for the first few nights. Stay out of bed unless you're ready to sleep. If you're not sleepy at 9:00, don't go to bed at 9:00. Wait until you can't stay awake anymore, 1:00 in the morning if that's what it takes, then go to bed. You'll feel crappy for the first couple of mornings, but hang in there.

After about a week of staying up as long as possible, begin to make your bed time earlier, maybe 30 minutes earlier each night, until you find a bed time that works comfortably for you. I tried this about 5 years ago and it works.

But going to bed when you can't sleep is counter-productive.

Clear your mind and don't think about stressful things before you go to bed. Read something boring or watch the news that usually bores me enough to crash out.
