You can take them, you paid for them. You just can't use them. Also if you are flying you'll have to pack them in your luggage. I dont think they'd be allowed in a carry-on.

In California the license plate customarily stays with the automobile it was issue to, and is considered property of the state. You aren't buying the plate as others have suggested, but rather are paying a fee for its use. When you move out of California with a vehicle registered here, you are supposed to send the plates back to the DMV.

Having said that, if you are moving to Europe, just take them with you. They're not going to come after you over such a trivial matter.

THE LICENSE PLATES do not stay with the automobile. you want to take the plates off and go back them to DMV to cancel your registration, or in some states you're in a position to only notify DMV and spoil the plates. in case you cancel your insurance on a automobile and function not both grew to develop into on your plates or canceled the registration, the DMV will provide you a not so severe-intense-high quality letter in optimal states and may want to also outstanding you. once you purchase tags, you're registering them on your call. you're in a position to bypass them to a sparkling automobile (like once you commerce in a automobile), yet you're in a position to't bypass only provide them to a quite some reason stress. Your acceptable guess is to call DMV and ask them in case you want to go back the plates, or only spoil them. in case you stay in NC, MD, ny or MA be very careful what you do with the plates.

You can take it with you. Are you planning to take your car to Europe too. CA is a great state for vanity plates.
