He resisted idol worship and basically started one of the oldest monotheistic religions in the world, Judaism. Truth be told, he wasn't THAT great of a guy in his personal life (two kids from two different wives and one of them was a servant! Schwing!) but spiritually, he was a great man.

Actually Abram ( later to be called Abraham ) was not actually Jewish or Hewbrew. He was born into a family / culture that worshiped many gods, the Chaldees of Ur. God called to him to leave his family / country, follow Him and seek out the land He grant to him and his descendants forever. Abram was seventy-five ( he lived 145 years ) when he finally heeded the call. He took his wife / half-sister, Sarai ( to be called Sarah ) and his nephew Lot. He tricked the Egyptian king into taking his wife, causeing plagues to be brought down on the Egyptians. He was given great gifts to leave Egypt.
He was told that he would have his own legitament heir but he chose to have a child with his wife's servant instead.
His full story is in Genesis 12 - 25:8

What is so outstanding about Abraham and about his faith in God is that when God wanted to manifest himself in human form, He chose Abraham to be the father of the race among whom He shall come, and manifest himself from his descendant after so many years and as God has planned to fulfill his prophecy which he spoke to with the serpent, the Devil. God told the Serpent in Genesis 3:15:
And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your offspring and hers;
He will crush your head,
And you will strike his heel."

Then what really makes the heart wonder about the character of Abraham more than any other Character among all of those who are mentioned in the Old testament and considered of strong faith in God is that Abraham heard the voice of God talking to him from the very inside of himself; he didn't listen to a person who stood before him like an Angel or an Archangel, but listen to that voice from within and obeyed God considering what he heard was God Himself without any doubts. This is really a great step toward a faith that according to the Bible made Abraham to be a righteous man, notwithstanding that no man considered righteous among all those believers who were prophets or those who feared God and followed the commandment s of God. We all know that we became righteous believers not because of a deed that we did, but because of the death of Christ on the cross and His resurrection that made who ever believe in Him takes the righteousness of Christ which is given by the grace of God. Abraham, when he listened to that voice, left every thing he has and went to the place that God shown him which He will give only to his descendant in the future. Abraham believed God although he had no children and his wife was barren. Also, Abraham was always considering that his eternal home shall not be a place on Earth made by man, but a place made by God in Heaven Himself. Abraham, based on this faith never built himself a shelter or a home to live in, but he was always a wonderer. Where ever he went, he pitched his tent and considered that the place where he is staying during his life is not his real home, and he was the first to know that his real home is in the Holy Jerusalem that shall come from Heaven ever since he believed in the voice of God and obeyed that wonderful voice proceeding from within himself. Thus all the planet Earth, consequently were blessed and received the grace of God which we all inherited from Jesus Christ by whom all the nations of the world received and thus were very blessed that God Himself has bestowed upon all the people through Christ who is the descendant of Abraham.

Abraham grew up in a multi-god worshipping community. It was a comfortable upbringing and he wanted for nothing.

When God came to him and told him to leave the only life he knew and to follow just the one and true God, Abraham believed God and left.

He lived in tents and followed the pathway to where God was leading him. God promised him a son and uncounted descendants. This was a strange promise to Abraham as he was into his old age and still childless. But still he believed God.

Now Abraham did falter in his faith quite a few times, but God stayed with him and protected him during these times of "lessor faith"

Everytime God tested his faith, Abraham learned a bit more and stayed closer and closer to God. When Abrahams group was faced with famine, he moved them into egypt in order to get them food. This wasnt what God told him to do, but his people were hungry and he put his and Sarah's life in danger in order to feed his people.

From this little episode, Hagar among other things, was given to Sarah as a bond servent.

Throughout all the ups and downs, Abraham remained fathful to God in his heart and even went to resue his nephew Lot when he was kidnapped many years later.

Abraham was righteous, and that made him a good leader. He loved God, and obeyed what God told him to do. His faith was strong enough to do what he needed to do, without knowing what the outcome would be.

He was a friend and believer in God/Jehovah. He did what he was told and prospered not only himself, but his people as well. In some senses of the word, he was rich.
