I'm on the diet and have been for around 3 years, but you really should buy the book, it explains what foods are good for you and why.

There are 3 phases of the diet...

Phase 1 is a low to no carb phase where you get your body used to limited intake of sugars. There is a lot of weight loss during this phase. Mostly you eat lean meat, eggs, low fat cheese, and nuts during this phase. No fruits or breads, yet. It lasts for about 2 weeks.

Phase 2 is a low carb and sugar intake phase where you regulate your eating in order to continue to lose weight. You add fruits to your diet, but within regulation.

Phase 3, you eat what you want within the confines of the diet. Your weight is maintianed in the diet, but when you start to gain or if you cheat, you go back to Phase 1 for a couple of days.

Again, you should really buy the book. It has a list of appropriate foods. There are some fruits that you are never allowed to eat...I forget which ones, but that's why I have the book! Plus the recipe's are pretty good.

As far as the microwave and sandwich wrap foods you find in the store, these are a last resort. Most of the time it's better to fix your own food.

I don't know about the basics. but at most grocery stores they have these wrap things with chicken that come Ina box for 2-3 bucks that are on the South Beach plan and are really good. I don't follow the plan, they are just good for my office lunches at work.
