How much do all you really know about what it takes to immigrate to this country? I will give you a scenario. A woman meets a man (or vice versa) and falls completely in love with him/her. They decide to marry but he is in this country illegally. How hard do you think it is for the immigrant to become a legal permanent resident?

To pancha, sweetie. You know nothing of me and I am no racist. My husband is mexican and I have already been through this process with him and just wanted to see how educated the rest of society really is. So many times I have come across people that think marriage is the easy way into this country. Let me tell you first hand that you are wrong. We dont chose who we fall in love with and the heart has a mind of its own. Before you start to spout off at the mouth, educate yourself and have facts to back it up people.

It's nasty difficult. The illegal immigrant would have to go back to the country of origin without being caught. Then they would have to get an immigration lawyer to take care of all the legal crap, which would take at least a year and I can't even tell you how much money, not to mention the year that they could potentially be spending apart from eachother.

I think it is pretty darn hard. Lots of paperwork and attorneys and might require the person to go to their home country and wait. It could be 2-3 years I think, even if all the paperwork and everything is done correctly and immediately. Plus there will be financial requirements. I'm no expert.

It can be hard and surreal, the problems you can face. If you are unlucky with your dossier, it can take years and years and a whole lot of money to finally have your legal status and then ordinary life begins, which is not easy at all if you have to start from scratch.

I know it takes sometimes years to work through the approval system, lots of money for lawyers and filing costs and if he is already here illegally, he might have to leave and wait to come back.

hard...honestly, it doesn't matter if the other person is in this country legally or illegally, it's just as difficult and time-consuming...and yeah...can be very expansive too...and the sad thing is that it sometimes takes less time to become a legal permanent resident illegally than to do it legally....

The answers you received are about what I expected. I've nearly finished with the process with my wife. When all is said and done it will have taken close to 3 years. And ours has gone pretty smoothly compared to others.

If the person truly wishes to become a US citizen then there are classes he/she must take and pass. I just don't know how long it takes and when does this person do, for income, in the mean time?

Educated enough to know that marriage-for-citizenship is one of the scams they're cracking down on pretty heavily these days.
