We really don't have any budget for purchasing scheduling software, so I was wondering if it would be possible to configure Excel to handle this. We already have a rudimentary system in place, but the biggest issue is data redundancy. If anyone has some advice on how I could set it up so that I would only have to enter a game once (instead of once for each team), how could I get Excel to calculate opponents' records, and anything of that nature, I would greatly appreciate it.

An easy to cut down on redundancy of data entry is, as you described you have game information that is entered for each team. You can enter the data for one team, then copy and paste it into the other teams are of the sheet or that team's sheet and change the name of the team after it is copied in.

Another way is to link between duplicate fields so when you enter one, it shows in both places.

Copy, Paste Special, Paste Link.

Calculating records can be easy.

If you have a column of games and a column some indication of the outcome of the game, it is easy to count the occurances of that indication. Say you use one column and you put W for win and L for Loss and T for Tie.

in a row below the column you can enter a formula to count the W's and L's and T's using a separate row for each.

Here is the formula for counting W's: =COUNTIF(B1:B6,"W")

It assumes you have the column only in Col B, row 1 to 6. Customize it for your particular uses.

Then just put a different formula in a nearby cell for L, T, etc.

Let me assume that this is for your personal use, or perhaps a school or club of some sort.

All the alternatives I am about to suggest are legal -- and perhaps more importantly, I will try and be as clear and UNambiguous as possible...

Option 1:
Within Excel, you can use a different portion of the "same" sheet to list all the games you are interested -- I typically use the IA65500 to IV65500 cell ranges, starting at the IV column and then moving backward, IU, IT... Then, where you expect to see the game (the actual cell) you want to use, from XL's menus, Data --> Validation --> Under Settings, change the value of "Allow" to List, then click on the small button to the right of field "Source" and navigate to the cells where you have keyed in the games. Press Enter. What that basically does for you is to eliminate the keying of name of the game, but you'd still have to select the game from the dropdown list.

Option 2:
For something a little advanced, highly useful and intuitive, see you can procure and use MS Access instead. Your data, reports, code/checks, reports (stylish at that) all of that can be easily done in Access. This is the best solution in my opinion -- assuming of course that you can afford to spend a couple of hundreds of dollars.

I just checked on CompUSA for pricing on Access -- the upgrade is 109.99 and the full version is 229.00. Now, before you jump to conclusions, I don't work for CompUSA :)

When you come to the point of doing so, there are tons of websites and forums which will give good and solid code -- most of which may require a little cosmetic and mostly commonsense tweaking.

Option 3:
For the FREE stuff -- you can download the express version of MS SQL Server 2005 (ja! yeah!) and "legally" -- very important -- from www.microsoft.com. It won't let you do any of the advanced stuff that DBA (database administrators) do but you can do all of what you'd want to using SQL Express. The big downside, you are going to need some programming / designing skills to back you up to view / edit / report the data.

Good Luck...

One nice thing about having Excel, they give excellent service. I know, it's my opinion, but I have found a group called Discussion Groups Home that has a question and answer forum on how to best use Excel. Here is the site: http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?so=0&pg=1&dg=microsoft.public.excel.newusers&guid=

You can type in a search question and then choose which area of Excel forum you want to search. I have found a lot of help this way.

Or you can go ahead and sign up to be a user and ask the quesion on line. Sign up and usage is free, there is no charge. It's the Excel version of Yahoo!Answers only much more selective.

I have seen TONS of questions how to set up forms for sports events, it shouldn't be to hard to find one.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Excel can do all kinds of stuff once you learn about formulas and macros. Macros are especially powerful because you can record of series of event in Excel that then repeat automatically once you activate the macro. To learn all this you either have to take courses in Excel or just monkey around with it the way I did until you learn all the neat tricks. The formula help section is quite handy, also.

it rather is a stereotype that turns right into a self-relaxing prophecy. From a youthful age, many Asian mum and dad and a few White mum and dad stress their teenagers to income extremely than play activities. people who've the athletic ability by no skill strengthen. Black teenagers take activities lots extra heavily and people (from mum and dad, coaches) provide them extra of a shot to prevail than different teenagers fairly Asian teenagers. it rather is an identical rationalization why there are maximum of Asians baseball gamers from Taiwan, Japan, and Korea yet 0 Asian-American baseball participant, why there are maximum of black working backs yet purely Peyton Hillis is an outstanding white working back (the stable white working back have been given moved to different positions in college), why there are maximum of white quarterbacks yet purely some black quarterbacks, why Jeremy Lin did no longer get an athletic scholarship inspite of preferable Palo Alto severe to state champion and did no longer get drafted 2 years in the past. those are all stereotypes that strengthen into conventional know-how and self-relaxing prophecies. Black rather everyone isn't inevitably extra appropriate at activities.
