2 hits in 20 minuets, how many milligrams of Morphine are you getting with each hit? It really depends on that. If your getting 10 mg. per hit, then yes 2 hits in 20 mins. IS too much, but if your only getting say, 2 mg., then I'd say no, it's not too much. When I had surgery on my foot, I had a PCA pump, and was allowed 6 hits/hour.

They program the machine so you can't OD. You can hit the button every second and you will still only get a set amount. The Doctor sets the amount you can max out at.

As a side note, most people on the drip machines you can control use less than those that have the old style and they had less pain when questioned.

I'm assuming you're speaking of a patient controlled analgesia (PCA), in which the patient can push a button to supply a small dose of narcotic IV. Normally there is also a steady supply of drug constantly flowing.

PCA is programmed such that the patient won't get a dose administered within a certain lockout time from the previous one. Generally speaking, they provide less narcotic and better pain control than the older system of nurse injections at designated times.

2 "hits" in 20 minutes isn't generally too much.

Hell no If I had a morphine drip, I would be squeezing the bag so I could get the full effect.

Depends on what the morphine is for, and the recovery chances of the recipient.

For terminal cases, you don't really have to worry about withdrawal, so I would say let them have as much as they need to be comfortable.
