i always wash all my foods, especially things such as rice, mushrooms, and meats.

And i don't mean just rinsing them under the taps!!!

i cannot understand people who leave the fat on their meats, don't wash the dirt of their veg., or wash the starch out of their rice, am i the only one who does this? or am i not alone??? (please excuse my bad english - had a lass of wine earlier and feeling a little tipsy...)

Thank you all for your answers. x x

actually if you consume dirt it is not at all good for your health.

By cleaning, i mean removing the general fat and dirt from meat, and washing dirt off veg, especially things like lettice where insects may still be lurking.

Has the world gone mad!!! I have no allergies other than to metal, and that certainly wasnt caused by ensuring i am not eating 'extra' meat with my veggies!!!!

wash in water, salt and lemon juice, are you guys mad or something - i don't know of anyone who would wash food in detergent, i agree that is a bit psycho!!!

AS for the kicking your kids into mud, i dont have any, but at the samer time did eat my fair share of mud pie as a child, and dont have anything against that at all. x x

yes! you should always wash your veggies! they are infested with bacteria...parasites...germs...and always cut vegetables on a different cutting board than meat cause bacteria can stay on the board for a long time. As for trimming all the fat of meat...i leave some on so it will be still tender a little bit and more flavorful but i'm not against it. And yes because i eat rice everyday...[im chinese] I have to wash the starch out or else i'll be fat! LOL....yeah its very important to wash your veggies so do it!

Well, you probably don't like the fat on your meat because you might have a cholesterol problem or something, but I don't and I like a little well grilled fat now and then. But then I only eat meat on special occassions. Need it more in winter than at other times.
I was told that mushrooms didn't need to be washed, only wiped down a little. But I think that vegetables and fruit need a good rinse, and rice needs to be thoroughly rinsed in a sieve about 4 or 5 times.
If, by washing, you mean soap or detergent, then I think you are indeed a bit compulsive. That kind of washing will damage the food and yourself. Detergents are as harmful as half the stuff you are attempting to wash away.
It is good to be careful; choose organic, rinse it well, make sure it is fresh, but don't obsess about it! A little exposure to bacteria will strengthen your immune system and allow you to have a happier life.
You don't seem too worried about the wine, though, funnily enough. Or are there soap suds in it?

When I wash food, it's generally to wash off unknown chemicals and things, but I don't go overboard. Mostly a quick rinse under the tap is sufficient. I only wipe mushrooms if they look dirty. I do tend to overcook food a bit though so maybe that compensates for it. I always thoroughly wash lettuce though especially from my garden to get off the bugs! I also believe that too much over-cleanliness must be contributing the increase in allergies and asthma etc. A little bit of dirt never hurt anyone. My kids are fit and healthy and only have maybe 2-3 days off school in a whole year, so I must be doing something right.

i am a chef and working with food all the time is really enjoyable and where i work it is only correct to wash every thing ffruit and veg has to be done as it comes in and also as it is used, things such as lettuce, cabbage, leeks and other things that can harbour dirt or insects in the leaves because it makes it look alot better when presenting it also dosn't have any grit in it while eating.although mushrooms i dont because if left they will go all slimy ind horriable.
meat is always good to wash off because it gets rid of all the dried blood and any excess bacteriea just make sure they are compleatly dry before putting them in any oil

any way to round up the question yes other people do wash food really well so have fun cooking and their is nothing wrong with you

Some of the things you are doing are quite sensible.....like washing the starch out of rice. This is a culinary measure, not a cleanliness measure.

Mushrooms need only to be wiped.

Fat can be left on meat during cooking, as it adds to the flavour and prevents the meat from drying out too much.

Some washing of fruit and veg is advisable, particularly things like canteloup melons, which are difficult for the wholesellers to clean, and when cut with a knife can transfer harmful bacteria to the insides.

I don't wash food, only grapes, cherries and rice. I probably should. As for meats, washing them doesn't take away all the bacteria from the flesh or veins etc. So washing meat won't stop you from getting food poisoning. But I suppose its better than not washing it at all.

Keep washing your food and you can;t go wrong... Unless you wash bread.. But that would just be silly. Hehehe.

All this rinsing and washing and brushing and trimming and worrying about germs and bacteria and whatnot is making the human race a bunch of weak-kneed pansies.

Do you know why there seems to be an unusually large number of people complaining about allergies? about breathing disorders? about being sick more often for longer periods of time?

Because everything needs to be too clean. Exposure to dirt, to germs, to viruses and bacteria all jump-start the immune system. Our bodies have (or at least, had) the ability to kick most any disease out there. We're just not letting them. For most of us, unfortunately, we're already too late, and our systems have gotten too soft.

Do your kids a favor: kick them into a mud-puddle and tell them to eat dirt.

Nothing to worry about I do too, jut not make a fuss about it. My boys are the scruffiest things you ever saw, At least they can eat clean, fat free foods. I feel better, they wouldn't care one way or the other, but I feel sick at the site of extra fat-including on bacon (when it supposed to be rindless) I grill most of my food, and always rinse my rice.
I don't use salt at all in any of my cooking or preparation-bad for children, bad for my kidneys.

I don't wash everything like it was coated with poison, but I definately wash chicken and mean under the tap. Getting that coating of cow manure and sawdust off my steaks just improves the taste for me.
