I suffer daily from clinical depression and anxiety. I am presently not working (since may '06), and staying with my boyfriend I have been with for over a year. My heavy depression is weighing him down. I can tell that he now resents me for not having a job yet here in Georgia (been here over 3 months without employment.) I truly want a job but am too physically ill most of the time to go through with the job hunt....panic attacks, dizziness, mind goes blank when someone asks me a question, so nauseated that I have to bring a bag with me wherever I go incase I need to throw up, negative thoughts and images race through my mind constantly now. I don't know how to make myself well enough to at least appear to be competent enough to actually be hired. I visited the local mental health department and they cannot see me until October (unless I threaten suicide, which I will not). Please, can anyone tell me what over the counter meds or herbs might help me until my doctor visit?

St John's Wort has been used effectively in Europe for centuries in dealing with mild depression, it might help you.

I don't advise St. John's Wort, as it is a blood thinner, and is not very effective.
You have to write down all your fears...in order to conquer them. Fear holds us back, brings on depression.
Sounds like you are in a new town. That can be scary. Also, I bet you are missing the loved ones you left behind.
Always be sure to take care of yourself first and foremost. You are important...you matter....!
No one can make you feel bad about yourself, unless you let them.
Try meditation, staying busy, persuing new hobbbies, candlelight, aroma therapy.
Find an online depression support group and join it. Vent your feelings there, and you will recieve much support, encouragement & advice.
It is very hard to be with a man who does not understand true depression, and some people don't.
You need him to be a cheer-leader for you right now.
Hang in there like a hair in a biscuit!

I have tried so many medications for this. Nothing has worked better for me than talking to supportive people, exercising (which boosts self confidence), taking vitamins and eating right. Seriously....You have no idea some of the things that will affect your moods. Also getting self control and just realizing that you have control over it. Sometimes we are our own worse critics and we beat ourselves up when others dont even see it. As far as the interviews go....thats normal for some. I had interview anxiety and it was awful...but then I needed to find a new job and go on tons of interviews...practice makes perfect. I am not exactly comfortable now going on them...i dont know of anyone that is. But I definately have a better idea of what to do and say. Sometimes you just need to give yourself a nice big kick in the butt.

You are not alone in your feelings. Many people suffer from depression and anxiety. But let me make a point. I doubt you are a health care professional so are really not qualified to diagnose yourself as clinically depressed. You may be depressed but need a professional to make a diagnosis. You should be able to see a regular MD within a week and they can refer you somewhere else if needed. There should be an organization for first call for help in your area. Contact them. You can find them on the Internet. And last contact my favorite web site www.recovery-inc.org . I am a group leader for this self help organization and we can definitely help you.

Hi there, I just laugh about my past 3 years of panic now. I was not able to go anywhere without carrying xanax. Fear of having another attack was the most important subject of my days. When i first found joe barry's web site i started to cry because of my happiness.

hmmm. well, i wonder sometimes if things we ingest or don't contribute to our moods. make sure you're drinking enough water, for one. take vitamins. if you're taking things that can contribute to depression, like birth control, i would consider stopping. st. john's wort, i've heard, is an herbal supplement that helps with mood. there probably isn't any clinical proof to back that up. there usually isn't with supplements. you could try it. but, yeah...i have the same problem you do but on a much lesser scale. i feel like that. i have issues with job interviews. so...you're certainly not alone.

dont take this the wrong way cause im on mental disability! there really isnt anything over the counter for people like us just tell your boy friend to be patient till you see the doctor in October and even when he prescribes meds some time it takes weeks for the levels to build up in your system to really have an noticeable effect so hang in there and get to the doctor!

take a good b complex and vitamin C...often they mix the two...st johns wort is wonderful to still the mood swings and keep you more even....also, to calm yourself at night or during anxiety...take 'valerian root'...it comes in a pill, and is the herbal extrated to make valium....works better than valium so dont take too much at first.

the bach flower rememdies work as well...these can all be obtained at healthfood stores.

stay away from caffiene...it will make you more irratic....and remember to breathe....sometimes just a few really deep cleansing breaths can readjust your perspective and mood. hope this helps....

oh dear theres is no over the counter drug you can have. you must ask the doctor. and by the way, are there any doctor available?
you know what..panic attack is a negative it wil cause you to tremble, will cause your heart to palpitate, speed your heart rate, cant breathe freely...but i tell you dear its all in rthe mind.
the right medicine for now is....get a therapeutic hobby....something that will focus your mind into it...
some cross-stitchings maybe, jigsaw puzles, talk to your firnd who you know who will listen to you, a change of environment will be a great help. give yourself a massage. don tyou know that a massage will make your muscles relaxed. get yourself some brisk walking, it will help, exercises
and hey...if you feel you are running out of breathe...try to inhale hot water with salt on it...it will soothe you....
BUT THE BEST MEDICINE REALLY IS THINK POSITVE...AND TELL YOURSELF...WHAT I FEEL, WHAT I FEAR OF...I CAN FIGHT IT! NO FEAR!
