My wife does want a pet, we've already discussed that. We wouldn't have vet bills because my wife's best friend is a vet and said that she would do stuff for us for free or reduced price.

want proof I'm in the military? If you don't believe me, I'll give you my ".mil" address. The only way to get one is being in the military.

Thses are ven better than free! >http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=&pet.Age=&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=93266&preview=1&scope=2&x=12&y=7
As they have been spayed/neutered, vet checked, most are house trained, all sots current, and parasite free! You could never get all of that done for the asked adoption fee!
Happy shopping.!! .just put in your own zip code, and click on any pic that you like.

PLEASE make sure your wife wants a dog or cat and can handle it while you are gone before you go and buy one. Owning a pet should be an agreement with everyone in the family.

My husband is military and I see other military families giving away animals all the time because of deployments or moving. Please take into consideration that you will most likely move at some point. I've seen it over and over families giving up their family pets because they don't feel like bringing them with them to their next duty assignment. It is quite sad. I have even heard of people giving their animals away when they have to move and then when they get to their next base they get new ones. Owning a pet is a big commitment and they should be considered as part of the family.

If she is in agreement with getting one, I'd suggest going to a shelter and getting an abandoned animal. It may cost you money, but it is worth it to save their life. Many times they will be altered as well if you are not getting a puppy or kitten. You can check petfinder too, it is a great resource. I have listed the link below.

As far as you not having vet bills because your friend can give them to you at a reduced price, you can't really rely on that. What if this person goes out of business? drops dead next week? what if you move? There are too many unforseen circumstances.

There are just too many things to consider when deciding to get an animal, just make sure it is what she wants too before making a hasty decision.

That said, we have 2 pugs and I love them to death. They are my furry kids and they help me out so much when my husband is gone. I used to be very lonely when he would leave on deployments, especially at night. It is nice having them here when he can't be.

1. Thank you for your service.
2. Have you run this idea by your wife? Are you sure she wants to be raising a puppy or kitten by herself? Raising a puppy has been equated to raising a toddler....a lot of work.
3. If you can't afford to purchase a pet, how are you going to manage the maintenance expenses. Food, accessories, vet bills, grooming, boarding, training........it all adds up. And that's just the expected stuff. If your pet is unexpectedly ill or injured the vet bills can be huge.
4. If your wife does want a pet, visit your local shelters and let her pick out the one she wants. She's the one who will have to live with it.

Does your area have a local animal shelter? If so, go there and let her find a puppy or cat she feels she would like. A puppy will usually give her more attention but requires a lot of training. You might think about adopting a more mature dog that is house trained. Usually a dog will come to you and pick you. True, really. Good Luck. Also, you will be in my prayers while in Iraq. Thank you for protecting us. I don't need to know your name because God does.

Great idea! There are usually lots of free puppies and kittens in the local papers. Or you could try http://craigslist.org, which is where I found a free ferret. Just look up your state/city, then go under free stuff, or pets. Good luck! God Bless!

Yeah, does your wife know you like fooling around with guys?

Check the free section of your local community's newspaper; someone's almost always giving away kittens or puppies. Also check the animal shelters. You'd be surprised. There are poor little animals who are treated quite good coz people grow attached to them and actually want to see them placed in a good home.

There is no such thing as a free puppy or kitten. They all cost something. The shots, spay/neuter, food and care costs. Contact the local animal shelter to see if you can find a pet for your wife.

I like the idea of going to the vet and looking at a bulletin board. The shelter is always good too.
Another word of advice, make sure she wants an animal. It is a lovely idea for you to care about her being alone(Awwwwwwwwww....) So sweet.
Thank you for serving our coountry too !!!!!
Give your wife Kudos as well for supporting you in your military career!

There are always ads for free pets in the newspaper classifieds. Also, go to your town's veterinary office. Often times they have postings for free pets; or they may have a client that is looking for homes for pets.

I would check the classifieds in the pets section, or see if you can get a reduced/free pet from the animal shelter, pound or humane society.
