money is a good gift and is fairly customary in the culture. Usually given in increments of $18 (the numerical value of the hebrew word "life")
Books are also a great gift a i.e. pictorial history of the jewish people by Ausubel, Jewish literacy by Telushkin
A gift certificate to a local judaica shop in your area.
shabbat candle sticks (or a havadalah set), kiddush cup (it depends on how well you know the person...because these gifts may be rovided for already...but since the person is "coming of age within the Jewish religion. ritual items are also a pretty common gift, but not as common as money.

I have done maintenance work for a Jewish facility and noticed that most guests gave the birthday celebrater money more than material gifts.
