DTP is used widlely by printing firms and as a format for publications produced by them which include images, Mast heads, 2,3 and 4 columnar pieces and flyers, brochures, etc.

Wordprocessing today can do many of these formats, but is used most often for typing of single column work such as letters, memos, manuscripts, fax cover sheets etc.

Where formatting of the layout is not a strong prerequisite, wordprocessing will suffice. Formatted layouts that need to be camera ready for a printer, must be laid out by a DTP program in order to be completed with relative ease and precision. The latter can conform more easily to camera ready requirements.
