You feel you have no confidence.

You spend a lot of time thinking about what has gone wrong, what will go wrong or what is wrong about yourself as a person. You may also feel guilty sometimes about being critical of others (or even thinking critically about them).

You feel that life is unfair.

You have difficulty sleeping or wake up very early in the morning and can't sleep again. You seem to dream all night long and sometimes have disturbing dreams.

You feel that life has/is 'passing you by.'

You may have physical aches and pains which appear to have no physical cause, such as back pain.

I've suffered with depression for years and years. Still haven't found the right medication. Good luck.

There are many signs, and it tends to go in stages. When I first started to suffer from depression, I became very withdrawn, and although I sometimes wanted to socialise, found it difficult and didn't enjoy it when I did. You start to not enjoy things you found enjoyable before, and have a continuing sense of despair and hopelessness. Problems that are relatively simple to solve seem like mountains to climb, and nothing you can do seems to make the situation any better. You can also find it difficult to express your true emotions, such as feeling overwhelmingly sad but not being able to cry.

More physical symptoms include being unable to sleep, having little or no appetite, and nervous actions, such as wringing of hands or fidgeting.

Thoughts of self harm and suicide are also common, although it is important to remember that although these feelings are scary, there is a massive gap between thinking these things and carrying them out.

It is very important to get the right help if these problems are affecting you; your doctor will be able to diagnose the symptoms, and give you the right treatment, and also refer you to other people in the mental health field who will be able to help you through this difficult time. Depression can happen to anybody, but often it cruelly affects the most conscientious and caring of people. Always remember that it is a temporary unbalance in your mind, and that with time and the right help you will recover, and perhaps even be a wiser person for the experience.

A Major Depression is marked by a combination of symptoms that occur together, and last for at least two weeks without significant improvement. Symptoms from at least five of the following categories must be present for a major depression, although even a few of the symptom clusters are indicators of a depression, but perhaps not a major depression.

Sleep disturbances, either difficulty sleeping, or sleeping too much
Loss of appetite and interest in food, or overeating, with weight gain
Recurring thoughts of death, or suicidal thoughts or actions
This list is a guide to help you understand depression. It is not offered for you to diagnose yourself. If you have some of these symptoms, don't focus on how many symptoms you have. Instead, talk to a psychologist about how you have been feeling, to see if he/she can help.

Went through it & still not over it. Well, I feel like sleeping all the time, eat basically to survive, loose interest in watching the telly, reading/ listening to depressing music, not wanting to see any of my friends, esp. those who think I'm over reacting to nothing & never try to understand what I'm going through.

Oh, the list goes on: getting offended by simple things, irritatable always, wanting 2be alone, wearing black & crying over sad songs.... its a bad.

Not being able to eat, sleep and crying constantly.I would say not being able to shake the feeling of sadness. I have to say that if you stay at home on a constant basis and ca'nt connect with others, there might be a problem.

some people with deppresssion feel that they are out of control when even the basic things go wrong. dont spend too much time alone ,get out & about. try & find a hobby.
