Islam, like any other religion or even philosophy, idea or thought, has been understood in different ways by different people due to their different way of thinking, culture, method of bringing up, and so many other variables varying from one to another.

Some of these methods are right, some are not.

So, there may seem many differences between them.

it's not "etc".. after the ascension of the Prophet, his followers were split on what direction to take the rapidly expanding religion. Essentialy, the surviving members of the religion had an arguement about who to follow regarding leadership of the Elect. The majority ( heretic) Sunnis split into one camp, while the genuine adherents of the One True Faith (Shiite) followed the first of a continous list of Imams. Basically, The Prophet was completely misunderstood after his death; much like jesus of galilee, who never intended for any gentiles, let alone romans, to be involved or saved by his message.

When the prophet muhammad(pbuh) died, he told his followers to elect one caliph(leader) for the islam nation. And he said if they did not(choose one) there will be much wars. That is the battle between the sunnis and shiites that have gone on for over 1300 years. The only other sects are the hanif-muslim and the suffis. but they are all about peace and the mysticism of allah and the quran. Never about war. The only jihad they will ever indulge in is the war within themselves. "The greates jihad of all is in one's self".

But most of the conflicts is not about islam, but warring clans/tribes that have been there since before the coming of the prophet muhammad(pbuh). I have a friend from somalia and he told me this. He said it is not over islam, but warring clans/tribes that have alsways been engaged in confrontation. Mostly over territory.

differenes came along because of the disagreements between people back in history. Because The original islam at the time of prophet mUhammmet (peace be upon him) was only one kind not more.
There is a huge difference between the muslims at the time of the prophet Muhammet around year 500, and muslims of the day. Todays muslims are mainly materialistic. It is the matter of them not practicing their religions about which they themselves do not know much.
I have seen thoushand of muslims, when u ask them something about islam, they would not know.

Probably due to the same cause as the schisms in the Christian religion. Born-again, Catholic, JWs, etc. Do all Christians see eye to eye ? Or are there hundreds of little sects claiming to be the true version. At least the Muslims all refer to one book.

There is a way that seems right to a man, the end thereof is death.

Every man does as he sees fit in his own eyes.

They wear religion like shoes, whatever fits!
