have a sister who is 11-years-old...I'm 20, and our brother is 21...I'm in college, and she and my brother live at home with our mother...the thing is, whenever I'm home and spend time with my sister, I notice that she only plays with her white Bratz dolls or the light-skin dolls...she's very dark-skinned because her father (who my mother divorced not too long ago) is dark...but my brother and I are medium-toned like out mother...I'm assuming our father was also....he and my mother divorced when I was about 4, and I don't remember him too much..........anyway...I've also noticed that my sister made her Avatar on Yahoo light-skinned with light eyes....I keep trying to get her to embrace her dark skin, but it seems useless...especially since she's the darkest one in the family know...any suggestions? I know it's because the media paints a picture of light as right and black as whack.....and I'm running out of ideas....

Turn off the TV and get her into sports or something which will boost her self esteem.

Beauty comes in all hues. However, for your sister, it may be a good idea to show her "beauty" in colors that most resemble the skin she's in. Relating is the key. I would also suggest a book series named From The Browder Files (Vol. 1 and 2 - there just may be a Vol. 3 by now) by Anthony Browder. This is a practical, easy-to-read book that dispels all those silly myths and replaces them with Truth. It's great for building self-esteem and gaining knowledge at the same time. Good luck with that!

11 year old girls are incredibly image-conscious. And the pressure to be like 'everyone else' is very strong. She might be trying to be like girls she looks up to at school, or who she sees as popular.

Maybe you could try to get her to spend some time with strong black women that she can look up to...family members or members of the community. If she can see women she respects loving and embracing themselves for who they are, then maybe it will help her do the same thing for herself.

I used to be like that. I am Latina and I only used to play with my blonde barbies. It's just what she feels is beautiful. Eventually she will realize that all people are beautiful, not just the light skinned. It's a phase.

Tell her she is beautiful and complement her skin tone. Tell her white people spend hundreds of dollars in tanning beds trying to have the beautiful dark skin she does. Show her super models with very dark skin and say that they are gorgeous. It makes me sad to hear that your sister doesn't like her color I think color is beautiful.

Hey, I am white guy...it just sounds like she is watching too much mtv, it's a phase. it will pass..I know alot of white boys teens that obviously want to be black, they think dressing up like a gangster from the projects is cool.
some people just can not be happy with the way god made them. Keep up the good work. we need to be proud of our skin color, not hate it.

It sounds like you're the one getting in the way and making value judgements. Good grief, she's 11.

Let it go and let her develop. If she has serious depression issues then perhaps some therapy could be in order, but it doesn't sound like that is your responsibility.

Do not really worry about it know, kids will be kids. I suggest you do something for her that will make her see how great your background is. What she plays with and how she see's herself are of no concerns now. Just give her time and she will come around.
