“Forgive us for the wrong things that we do. Other people do wrong things to us. But we know that we also must forgive those wrong things.

Forgive people when they do wrong things to you. If you forgive them, your Father in heaven will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive them, your Father will not forgive you.”

Matthew 6:12 and Matthew 6:14-15

Jesus told a story about forgiving people:

“Then Peter came to Jesus. ‘Lord, if my brother keeps on hurting me, how many times should I forgive him?’ he asked. ‘Should I forgive him seven times?’

‘No, not just seven times, but forgive him seventy times seven times’, Jesus said.

The important thing to realize about forgiveness is that Christ's forgiveness is infinite. We, as Christians, should strive to be like Him, and thus to forgive offenses against us. However, it is not smart to put yourself in a situation where you expect to be hurt over and over again. If a person continues to hurt you, there comes a point where you just have to tell them you love them as a brother or sister in Christ, but simply cannot subject yourself to any more pain.

Here is a good analysis of what the bible has to say about the subject. http://www.bible.org/page.asp?page_id=851

What is natural to "the flesh" (the carnal nature) when we have been hurt or abused or insulted is to strike back, to plot revenge, or to simmer in bitterness. This is "only human". But God requires forgiveness, else He will NOT forgive us. If we are unwilling--or unable--to forgive, then there is no use asking God for what He has told us He will not give. For believers, dealing with the sin of unforgiveness is first priority.

I don't know exactly where it is, but Jesus said, "Do not forgive them seven times, but seventy times seven".
In other words, just keep forgiving people for the same things, no matter how much you have to forgive them. Just keep forgiving.

Here are two:

God's forgiveness towards us:
1John1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Our forgivenss of others:
Ephesians 4:32 - And be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you.

As for how many times...we are to forgive others as God forgives us. He forgives us endlessly, so there is our command.

Luke 12:10 ...but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

Josh 24:19 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.

Matthew 18:21-22

Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

The phrase "seventy times seven" is not to be taken literally to mean 490 times, but is figurative for "unlimited". If someone sins against you, as a Christian believer you are required by Jesus' teachings to forgive, regardless of circumstance. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus says that if you want to be forgiven, then forgive! (Matthew 6:14-15)

Isaiah 55:7 says God forgives in a LARGE way.
Psalm 86:5 says God is ready to forgive.
How many times ....Matthew 18:21,22.
As long as there is reason to believe the wrongdoer is not abusing your forgiving attitude, forgive.

Yes, there is.

Matthew 18:21-23 (King James Version)
21Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

22Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

23Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.
