When your fingers get wrinkly, your skin is actually expanding not shrivelling up!

Your skin is made up of layers. The top layer is covered with a special water-resistant oil called sebum. When you play in the water for a long time (like when washing your car), this oil is washed away. Without this oil, your fingers are no longer water proof, and water is able to make its way into the top layer of your skin. The extra water in your fingers causes the skin swell and expand in some places, but not in others… making your fingers look wrinkly!

A lot of people think its because the skin loses moisture in the skin of the fingertips, just like a real prune gets wrinkly. They're wrong. In reality the tips of the fingers and toes are not totally waterproof and absorb water, causing the skin to expand. And thats what causes the wrinkles.

This was on TV recently. The entire body is protected with waterproof oils. That is why most water will just bead on your skin and run off. However there is no oils on your fingers, palms, toes or soles of your feet. They havent been washed of or dried out, they just aren't there. Those parts of the body excete a little oil upto about the age of 10 to 15 months. This is to stop a baby shrivelling up when it is submerged for 9 months!!!

After that you lose your oils and that is why they wrinkle!

our palms, fingers and the soles of our feet are the only parts of our bodies that naturally have no hair, as these areas don't have the protection of the body hair, the skin becomes wrinkly if left in water for too long.

The palms of our hands are the only place where our skin isn't waterproof, therefore, the relatively thick moisture leaves our fingers to the thin water in the bath.

When you stay in the bath or shower too long, water seeps into your skin, causing it to swell. However, there is connective tissue in your fingers that holds your skin to your muscles and bones. Those are the creases.

skin is water resistant (not waterproof) and has certain oils to help keep from getting water logged (wrinkly) and when you stay in water long enough those oils get washed off.

your skin is only designed to asborb so much water, when you are in the tub for a certain period of time, that excess moisture will cause your skin to get wrinkly.
