Yes you can see them!
I know this because I have worked in the security sector.

It all depends on the wave length. The most common way that security cameras see in the dark is that they make use of low cost infra red LED's. Some of them can be seen in absolute darkness but only from very nearby.

If your intention is to detect a security camera, for example you would like to know if someone has installed a hidden camera somewhere, you can detect this in two different ways.

The first option is that you buy a low cost security camera set that has some infrared LED's, you connect this camera to a portable LCD screen, creating your own night vision goggles. If you would to cover the infra red LED's your screen would be black as there is no artificial light anymore. If you use this camera as a searching tool for hidden light sources (for example you see a light source on your screen but not with your eyes) you found some one else his security camera.

A more professional approach is that you buy at an army store some night goggles with build in infra red light and do the same as above.

So, although you will not be able to see infra red with your eyes, you can see it with a simple tool :)

Kind regards,
Sebastiaan

Just an observation they are good to tell if your car has had any panels resprayed after damage or when you buy a second hand car,It shows on the camera a different shade, yet another piece of useless information.

No the human eye cannot perceive infrared light.

No you can't.

Animals can. Dogs, cats and... goldfish.

Infrared operates at end of visible light, meaning its invisible.

They SHOULD be invisible, but often give a red glow, it depends if there is a filter.
