In a nutshell the Atkins diet consist of removing as much carbohydrates from your diet as possible and consuming high protein foods. The Atkins diet allows you to eat fats. This is a low carb diet, not a low fat diet. The diet is built on the principle that it is the carbs and sugars that make you fat.

How to approach the Atkins Diet: It is getting more difficult to find Atkins products in the store, so you pretty much have to do it your self. Firstly cut all sugar from your diet. You have to be a label reader. Sugar comes in several forms. Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Honey, Molasses, Dehydrated Cane Juice. Read how many sugar grams and carb grams are in the product.

In the Atkins Diet you have to restrict your consumption of vegetables such as carrots, beans, peas and corn because they also contain sugars and carbs. No bread, no squash, no salads or fruit.

An Atkins meal will have a large piece of meat on the plate and a small vegetable like broccoli. Cheese and even sugar free low carb icecream. You can have all the meats, eggs and cheeses you want. This gets to why I don't favor this particular diet. I would die if I had to eat like that. You might want to look up the South Beach Diet. Better tasting and it allows you more food choices.

I can't get over people who answer questions who have no idea what they are talking about. The first 2 posters are an example of what I am talking about!

Atkins is NOT unhealthy. Not all FAT. Not NO carb! Does not raise your cholesterol. It is the best way of eating I have ever done in all my 47 years. Before Atkins I did "low fat" counted calories you name it I did it and unfortunately when these diet's didn't work out I resulted in trying to control my weight by making myself vomit. I didn't binge but used vomiting every meal a way of getting to actually eat and not starve myself. My teeth were shot, my heart was constantly beating out of control. Basically I was killing myself.

Then I found Atkins! What a gift in my life this has been. I am very short and for the very first time in my life I can actually eat and eat alot. I do not count calories and only at first when losing my weight did I count carbs. Now I just maintain but eating legal things and eat until I am comfortably full. To me this diet is heaven on earth. For the first time I can eat without guilt. For 2 1/2 years I haven't made myself puke once. Haven't felt the need too. Lost 50 pounds and feel wonderful. My cholesterol level is perfect as is my weight stays the same. My doctor is even in favor of this way of eating. I say way of eating as a diet doesn't work that is temporary. This is how I eat now for the rest of my life.

An example of meals I may eat out at a restaurant.

Applebees: Often order take two (I get two steaks or a steak and salmon or chicken) a salad and grill veges. No bread or potato. Who needs them

I learn the Atkins publication and the weight loss program didn't make feel to me. The one problem I had with is that they inform you that you are going to need to purchase dietary supplements they're going to sell to you. That just rings false to me as good as the very fact they tell you not to consume fruit for the first 2 weeks. Protein will maintain you feeling fuller for longer because of this humans shed extra pounds on it. But some individuals also get problems with dangerous breath and severe constipation. I believe weight watchers seems a much better weight-reduction plan than Atkins.

To lose weight, a person has to reduce the calorie intake by some amount by modifying their diet. A diet without sufficient nutrients will only increase the appetite of the person trying to lose weight. Since most people combine a diet with an exercise plan, additional nutrients are required for the growth of muscles required to increase the metabolic rate required for long term weight loss. To those nay sayers, the diet has been proved to cause NO HEALTH DEFECTS, if followed correctly. You must take the vitamins and essential oils to be healthy. As far as health issues later in life, if you still follow the maintenance plan of the diet, you will have no issues. I have been on this for 4 years, lost almost 80 pounds and am very healthy, heart and blood wise. I do have other issues but they are injury related. Good luck on the diet.

basically, its a high fat/protien diet and avoids all carbs. I dont agree with this diet because the way you eat will cause problems for you when you are older, heart problems, cholesterol problems...but if you go ahead with it, just look up the atkins diet on google and you can find the instructions on what to eat and when. I know the first week is all high fat and protien...beyond that im not sure.

Im 5'1 and 120lbs, last year i was 5'1 and 161 lbs!!!! yea believe it, i tried trimspa, and lost 10 lbs the first week...no green tea or anything like that...just eat healthy, which is what i did...i didn't exercise though...but it still worked out. i lost a total of 40 lbs in a couple months! and over a year later, i haven't not gained one pound back...and after i did that, i now have my conscience trained to avoid bad foods... i.e. now they make me feel sick.. but thats good right??? trimspa, im serious, walmart a bottle of 75 for $20.00!!! by the way, trimspa, curbs your appetite. but you can eat as much as you want, i used to be able to eat a 6inch sub sandwich, but now i can barely eat the whole thing.....what ever you do all day, when you feel hungry, drink WATER!! no soda, candy, sweets, breads, carbs.... and if you do, do not over do it.

Buy all the food you need for each step ahead of time, and get rid of everything you're not allowed to eat. My biggest problem was not having any food that I could actually eat.

avoid this "diet" like the plague. it's very unhealthy and the moment you stop following it exactly you'll gain weight back. try a diet with lean meats, whole grains and produce. much better for you. also get plenty of exercise.
