ok I like to write a lot of letters using word most times I do not have a problem. When I want to change something or add a word inbetween other words I just click where I want it and add the words, no problem, sometimes when I do this the word I am adding eats into the next word and doesn't create a space for anything new, why is this. I know how to combat it but I would like to know why it does it and can I do anything to make it right?
THANKS

that happens on Y! A sometimes, this question helps me alot, but it some what to late when I need this information,in high school last yearwhen I was writting 20 page papers. What i would do is press enter were i wanted to add a word or letter, then press space, then press backspace and it wouldn't delete any other word. Also I would x out of all word documents, then save them, then go back to them. Now just tink of all the time I wasted going that, I mean why wouldn't Windows just fix the problem in a patch or something.

Very simply word uses 2 choices
Insert
Overwrite

The INSERT key toggles between these 2 modes, sadly there isn't a readily visible method of seeing which you are in.

However look on the VERY bottom status line and you will see the tags
REC TRK EXT OVR {Dictionary language - eg} (English US)

The 1st 4 will normally be grey, if you have OVERWRITE on then it will be black.

Simply press insert once and watch it go grey.

all you have to do is puch the insert key on the right hand side over by the numbers. And it will stop eating your word i do it all the time.

No I don't think so, I've had the same problem and at times it drives me crazy because it can sometimes destroy a whole paragraph. I've looked into everything and asked my computer repairman and he has no idea. It just happens over night, you turn the darn thing off and the next time it comes up like that.
Sorry can't help you.
Just read the other answers "Thanks guys"

Look for 'OVR' on your status bar. By pressing INSERT on the keyboard you can toggle between overwrite mode when you type
