What ever you do, DO NOT run. A running animal (or in this case, person) triggers the predatory instinct in these large cats, and it will make them chase you even if they had no prior intention of doing so.

Neither mountain lions now bobcats are man-eaters. They will not hunt humans. The only reasons such a cat would attack a human is if you are violating its territiry by getting too close to it or if it feels that you are a threat to it or its kittens from and running away isn't an option.

If you ever find yourself in such a situation, slowly back away fromt the animal, remaining calm. Once it realizes that you are not a threat, it will retreat. If something causes the animal to attack you anyway, the two best ways to defend yourself are either to oike it in the eyes or choke it by forcing your hand.foot down its throat. (Note that the second defense is to be used only if your hand/foot is being bitten; never intentionally insert part of your body into a cat's mouth!)

P.S. One of the other responders said that eye contact is considered an act of aggression. This is true for dogs/wolves, not cats.

Whatever you do, make sure you do not run. Prey runs. BE still and stand up(do not crouch or hunch). and make noise, yell even if you want to run them off. Bobcats and Pumas tend to be more private and "reserved", especially around people.

Only a sick one would continue to advance after the above. If that is the case, prepare to defend yourself.

I'm told that you should make yourself as large as possible and definitely not run or do anything that makes you look like "prey." You are going to get a lot of conflicting advice on this site, though, so my recommendation is that you do a web search and look for some more credible information.
