2 pieces of rope,not equal in lenght,and each not the same thickness,they tapper from one end to the other.
What they have in common is that each rope will burn for an hour how can the ropes be burned for an hour and a half,no you dont have a clock and cutting the rope would leave you with a fat end and a thin end

start one burning at one end tie the unburning end to both of the ends of the unburnt rope, when all the rope is burnt 1 and 1/2 hours will have passed

Each one burns for an hour.

You light both ends, until the original rope is half of what it use to be, that way you have two half lengths - that's half an hour. Then you stop one end, so there is only one end burning for an hour.

Tie one narrow end half way up the narrow end of the other and light the thick end of the first rope.
