Yes, his speech yesterday had the sound of a person reaching for straws. According to him, "reason" is fine as long as you don't take it too seriously. And Islam can't understand the West because we use too much reason.
Personally I'm disappointed in the poor quality of the his presentation. His encyclical "Deus Caritas Est" seemed to be on the right track asking Christians to get to the business of doing something about the human condition. This latest foray is just political fodder for the reactionary wing of his church.

You are about 400 years behind the times.
The Church supports science in the discovery of God's creation.
For example, the Catholic Church does not take the story of creation in the Bible literally. Catholics believe it tells religious truth not historical fact.
The religious truth is that God created everything and declared all was good.
At this time, the theory of evolution is the most logical scientific explanation. However tomorrow someone may come up with a better idea.
As long as we believe that God started the whole thing, both the Bible and modern science can live in harmony.
With love in Christ.

Our senses are imperfect. Our instruments are imperfect. Our minds are imperfect. You will never get perfect knowledge by science, no matter how long and how hard you try. Catholic Pop may fear science, but Hare Krishnas do not fear science, because in the books of His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada there is everything to expose the foolishness of and totally smash many aspects of the modern science.

evolution is a faith.. mathematicians say it is not only improbable, but is impossible for even one of the amino acids needed for life to have formed randomly.. natural selection is not evolution, neither is fossils. Such as a tree with longer roots in their DNA, will survive drought. They do not evolve longer roots but the long roots are in their genetic code, which code was unknown in Darwin's day..
....what's an anomaly? the inability to bend certain scientific data to conform to one's philosophy. There's a lot of anomalies.
....P.S. many folks fear the frankensteinian elements of some science.. some potential pandora's boxes.. and _rationalities_ such as the apparatus of taking life, before and during (partial) birth, and see it as a possible forerunner..

I think not, although I belive science is stronger, since it is more current and widespread. The Pope dislikes science because science is questioning and and has been questioning the bible since it's birth, and now religion is at risk of being overthrown compleatly as the masses turn to science for answers. It makes you think, what sort of anarchy there would be if science disproved God?

correction, science can set the world free from primitive bla bla.. like you said. but then again, in the wrong hand, science can destroy the world. now which one you prefer, to live in a world with religion or to not live at all coz there is no world??? anyway, what i'm trying to say is, science is good if u use it good, is bad if u use it bad. to be good means to know manners. to know manners mean to know religion.. that's the way it goes..

Yes, you can say that and I do believe certain things about Science. But why are you so determined to prove there is no God and prove that Science is correct? Don't worry about us the believers of God, if we are wrong, just imagine yourself having the world all to you, you will be alone, alone, alone. Please thank us for giving you a chance to help you communicate and converse and argue with others. See you fellow.

The Catholic Church has an observatory, and the Pontifical Academy of Science, comprised of the worlds top scientists.
Your profound ignorance might color up your hate propaganda, but you can't fool everyone with it.

science is imperfect as studies' findings contradict themselves.. science is based on empirical evidence and some,if not most, is theoretical and not proven, it has FAR to go.
however, science and religion have the same great aim...
to free man from the darkness of ignorance.
