I say "on the front of my legs" because the tightness and soreness is occuring right above my ankles and only occurs on the front of my legs, not the back. I usually start to get these pains after running for a few minutes; usually they start off as an ache, but then it begins to feel like they are tightening.
Any idea?

I don't run a lot due to a previous and separate ankle problem; this one is separate from that.

The pain is called Shin Splints

"Shin splints are injuries to the front of the outer leg. While the exact injury is not known, shin splints seem to result from inflammation from injury to the tendon (posterior peroneal tendon) and adjacent tissues in the front of the outer leg.

Shin splints represent one member of a group of injuries called "overuse injuries." Shin splints occur most commonly in runners or aggressive walkers. "

Matt323i is right, they are shin splints, but shin splints are actually small fractures that are hard to diagnose, because the fracture follows the line of the tibia (long bone in the lower leg), in other words, the fractures run "north /south" as if your knee were in the "north position, and you foot in the "south" position. Stop running for a few weeks, give the bone a chance to heal! Good Luck!!!

Shin splints can become quite painful. I would say the age of shoes can be a cause of the problem. When I got them in the past, I quickly replaced my running shoes. Also massage them when you are done running as well.

I deffinetly know what you mean. It could be that you need new shoes, or just a break from running. If you rest for about 1 week you will feel much better running. Thats what I did, my shoes wore out and then my knees started hurting just basically what you described. I have different shoes now with more cushion plus I rested for about 1 week and i feel much better now. Just rest your body, and dont push yourself.
