I agree with you. This life is such for such a short period of time; eternity is forever.

Yep, that's true. Life is very fragile and very fleeting. You never know when that fragile spark that you carry will be extinguished. That's why I don't contemplate dying a whole lot. I'd rather enjoy the time I've got in this life. As to what happens to me after I die, I don't know for sure. I don't think anyone truly does. All we can do is guess and go with what feels right.
I do know for certain that if there are only two places for souls to go after they die, I'm in trouble. Hell will have a lot of interesting people but be too hot for my liking and, even though the climate in Heaven will be better, I don't think I'll like being around the self-righteous people that supposedly end up there. Plus, I'll be bored out of my mind. All of the things that make existance worthwhile won't be there. (Sex, good food, good music, conflict and the inevitable & satisfying conclusion of that conflict...)
Guess none of that matters for me, though. I believe in reincarnation. Maybe that's what happens, maybe not. Maybe I'll end up rotting in the ground or being roasted over a spit by demons for all eternity. Either way, I'm out to enjoy the ride. This life may be all I have.

I say, what have you got to lose?
I mean, if there is no eternal life, then at the very least you can say that you lived a good life treating people as YOU would like to be treated, which by the way isn't necessarily religious in that way of thinking, it's basically common sense.
If heaven exists or not, is not my place to prove to you either way, but I can tell you that being respectful of others is the only way in which respect will be given to you.
Faith is only an opinion (see the dictionary if you do not believe me)
So, it is every ones right to have faith in that which they believe.
If heaven exists great, but if it doesn't, then that just means we only have this one chance to show the world what YOU are really made of. and that comes down to one of two ways, Respectful or disrespectful. Choose which one you would like to be remembered for, but also realize that which ever one you choose, is the same which will be reflected back onto you.

Sure. If someone says I'm going to give you a vacation to any place you want to go I'd take him up on it wouldn't you. Then I'd ask him what must I do to be given such a wonderful gift. His response would be don't worry I've taken care of all the details you don't have to do anything. It is a free gift. I've done all the work. But in order for you to receive this gift I just require that you claim me as your friend and live your life as well as you can in such a manner as to be pleasing to me.
Wow. What a deal. God does all the work. But I must prepare myself to be worthy of such a magnificent free gift. If I don't claim Him as my friend I can't receive the gift. And if I truly appreciate the value of this gift I will do everything in my power to be pleasing to God.
You see scripture says Christians can have a dead faith (faith without works is dead) or you can a saving faith. What is a saving faith and how does it relate to works? Scripture says "by their works you shall know them". So works don't earn salvation they simply identify the individual who has a saving faith. If you find a person who simply is not working for the Lord you have found a person with a dead faith. Works are an outflowing of one's saving faith that cannot be restrained. A person with saving faith can do nothing other than work for the Lord. It identifies who he is.
So in a round about way I hope I have answered your question. I have prepared for eternity by claiming Jesus as my friend and Savior. And as a result of my love for such a gift I just can't quit doing things for him!

I have what some would call a bad attitude. When I die I fully expect to spend eternity in the ground or wherever they fling my corpse when I go. And the funny thing is I believe in God and Jesus. I just do not think there is a heaven.

How does anybody know how to be "ready". It's useless to sit and stew over what the next life is going to be like. Just live the life you're living right now, be a good person, treat others the way you'd want to be treated. That's all you need to worry about. Nobody knows what the next life is going to be like, if there even is one. Just be a good human being on this earth and worry about the next life when you arrive there.

I don't know about "eternity," but when I kick the bucket my remains will, depending on the winds & tides, travel down the Hudson River. I prepare for death by living.

Eternity is a long long time. The Bible says "Be ready". That is exactly what is wise to do for the best preparation.
