its his first time at school so he is probably a little overwhelmed. Have him pick out what to put in his lunch. Help him "make the sandwhich" and tell him to put it all in his lunch bag.

My daughter does this too. I'll send her to school with lunch and most of it will come home uneaten and she'll eat it at home instead. My theory is that she doesn't really have time to eat much at lunch, she's overstimulated in the lunch room, and if she was STARVING she would eat anyway. I've just started packing her some water, 1/2 a sandwich, and a piece of fruit or applesauce... something small. If she's hungry at lunch she'll eat that and then she can eat when she comes home. They also have snack time mid-morning in her class, so I know she's not going to waste away. Hope that helps!

boy do I empathize with you I had a picky eater myself. You need to find out what he wants to eat. you can't force him to eat thigs he doesn't like. they don't do that. He may be eating other kids lunches. Mine did. the ideas about taking him with you shopping excellent. also how is he eating at home? Is he eating well there? Maybe he is making up for it there. some kids at least at the Begining of the school year have so much going on socializing that they don't take the time to eat. that happened with my daughter. talk some more with him and find out what is really going on. Is he not liking what you are sending in or too busy socializing?

good luck.

I worked for a summer kids program, and the picky eaters were not allowed to participate in any games or activities until they finished at least half of their lunch. They forced them to eat things that I myself would never eat (like green beans) but these kids ate so they could join the other kids. The lunch room monitors need to pay more attention to the kids and make them eat. I knew one little girl who would go the entire day and not eat if she could.

Sit down with him and come up with some possibly combos for things he would eat. Let him help pack it.

Also, at the start of the school year they have to learn to EAT and not just socialize at lunch.

He could be embarrassed about bring his lunch to school, need to find out what goes on @ lunch time, does he get teased, if nothing is going on you are going to spend a lot of money to figure out what he will eat.

Try finger foods that he can pick and nibble on. Like chicken nuggets in a thermos, or cut cheese and pepperoni, with crackers, or yogurt and carrot sticks for dipping. Apples and peanut butter are good too (just put the apples in orange juice so they don't brown).

In grade one dont they get recess? maybe he's excited about playing outdoors and plays instead of eating...I know when i was in first grade, your teacher escorted you to the cafeteria but you were on your own after that until they rounded you up to go back to class.

Ask him what he is doing during lunch time

Maybe he is nervous about something at school?? Or nervous about sitting at lunch break w/ people? Just some thoughts,, I would really speak to his teacher. He or she will have a better idea of whats going on. Just some thoughts......
