I'm a 26 year old from mexican parents but born in usa. I speak spanish but i don't speak it well because i'm not a talktive person.. i'm shy and quiet. I feel i cannot improve because i don't joke around, don't like gossip and i'm just not lively like all the other mexicans i see. So, i will never be good at it if i continue to be shy? Mexican spanish doesn't have room for quiet people?

There are many issues in this question. I'm not sure if I can give you a short answer.

First of all, yes, there is room in Mexican culture for shy people. If you ask your parents, I'm sure they will tell you that there are some shy people that they know. There are shy people and outgoing people in every culture.

Nevertheless, you have noticed that the behaviors of a particular culture don't completely fit with your personality, and that this might affect your way of interacting with people from that culture. For example, among my American acquaintances I am considered to be very affectionate, but in Mexico people thought that I was a little cold.

It sounds like you actually know how to speak Spanish already, but you just don't feel comfortable talking. This doesn't really seem like a language-learning issue to me. I suspect that you don't feel all that comfortable speaking in English either. So it's more of a self-confidence issue.

In short, I don't think you really have anything to worry about. However, if you would like help getting over your shyness, you could see a psychologist or someone who could help you not to worry about it as much.

Being shy has nothing to do with how well you speak Spanish. Just keep practicing and ask people you speak with to correct you. I suggest to read in Spanish and watch TV in Spanish since hearing how others speak it will help you with pronunciation. But again, practicing with others is the best way to improve your Spanish. Just practice with people you feel comfortable with and don't worry about how you sound! You'll get the hang of it!

Good luck!

Por supuesto que no! If you are really shy about talking to other people in Spanish why don't you try to hear songs in Spanish and sing along (obviously when you are on your own) and also try watching tv shows in Spanish with captions in Spanish as well, I told my students to do that and their language skills have improved.
