I don't want to end up spending hundreds of dollars for it; but I want something that will help me with my let-down. My last baby I had to stop breastfeeding because my milk just didn't come the way I wanted to, my family was getting frustrated with me and I was getting actully no support with it at all.

I need a pump between nursing to expell, so my husband can feed her and when I plan to return to work. As for the hospital rental pumps, are they clean? I don't mean to be gross about it... I just wonder are they an affordable route for me.

Are you on WIC or have you tried to apply to WIC. They will give you a free one. When I had my twins I qualified for WIC because I was underweight and anemic and they gave me one that I used for all my babies. Other than that, look for one with the dual pump it works the best. Medela has one so does Evenflo, just look at the baby care section at a department store like Wal-Mart or Babies-R-Us

Edit:
rental pumps are clean, they only rent the pump part. You have to buy the tubing cups, etc. They will sale you the pack where you get the pump or talk to your hospital. Mine gave me one for free right after I delivered (it also came with a hand pump.)

If you intend to rent one for long it gets very expensive though. Before I found out about WIC I rented one for one month and it was $50. If you intend to use it long that really adds up. I didn't look around too much- My daughter was in NICU and I needed one right away- so you might be able to find one cheaper if you look around.

It depends on what you need to use the pump for. Are you talking about occasional pumping to relieve engorgement or so Dad can give an occasional bottle? Or daily pumping because you're going back to work?

For a manual pump, the Avent Isis is a great pump.

For an electric, I'd suggest the Medela Pump In Style. If you live in the USA, you can save some money by buying it from a Canadian site like http://www.kidalog.net/index.php?cPath=25_26 because the exchange rate is really good. When I got mine there a few years ago, the total came out to about $175 for a brand new PIS!

Do you qualify for WIC? Some WIC offices will give out breastpumps to their nursing moms.

You could also look into renting a double electric pump from your local hospital.

Do you have a lactation center near you (maybe at the hospital?)

Usually they can help provide a very good pump for a little rental fee~Ameda & Medela are both good brands with pretty good warranties on their parts as well. But some of those can be pricey. A lactation center can also provide you with support-just remember you are doing the best thing possible for your baby. Try to relax, when mommy is tense milk won't let down or take longer & baby can sense a tense mommy too.
Good luck to you & your baby. Whatever decision you make-remember it is your decision =)

The Avent Isis. It's very reasonable, and the best manual on the market. Avoid anything made by Evenflow or Gerber; they have too strong a suction and can actually dammage your nipples.

My friend rented one from the hospital..any part that comes in contact with your body is completely new. Ask at the hospital when you deliver.
